I think too many people are getting carried away about how the Cubs did not make one single trade today. While agree that they could have at least acquired someone like Jeff Conine or Johnny Gomes, you also look at what the competition did, and the competition did not do much. They gave up three prospects, two top-level guys, for a middle reliever. And with plenty of baseball to play and just one game back any day now the Cubs and Brewers can be tied or the Cubs can take the lead outright. And keep in mind they still can get a player like Conine or Gomes in August through waivers for low level minor-leaguers.

Conine, maybe, but probably not.

Gomes, no chance.

Wait, wait, you're the guy who made up a Griffey rumor from ESPN Radio? And now you're... going to continue posting?

What do you mean "nobody did anything?"

The Braves, Mets, and Phillies are better teams, and quite possibly teams that the Cubs will have to contend with for the Wild Card.

The "Competition" is the whole National League.

One team in our league did something meaningful. That qualifies as almost no action.

while several teams improved themselves before the deadline the cubs only made themselves worse by taking on a a worse catcher and making no other moves at all. At least its Milwaukee that will win the division not the cardinals.

it just feels like we missed an opportunity to clearly seperate ourselves from the pack in the central.

I don't think there was really much of an opportunity. Look at how little movement there was. I don't think there was much available at prices that weren't outrageous.

What teams meaningfully improved themselves, really? Besides the Braves, I don't think any NL teams improved much via trades.

That seriously is the most ignorant statement ever. How did Milwaukee get better, Scott Linebrink?

Have you forgotten that we have been consistently gaining on them for 2 months? My God.

Braves were the only team to significantly improve themselves yes. But the mets added a 2B that they needed Brewers added a reliever Padres added a few players and these teams were already better than us anyways. So while there improvements might be small but a small increase is better than a negative one though. So it looks like will be on the outside looking in once again.

I am fairly certain they are still ahead of us even with there best pitcher on the dl. When he gets back there lead will go up again.

Linebrink will not push the Brewers over the top. None of these minute changes will alter the odds in the NL by anything significant.

Agreed. No one besides the Braves got any better...

I have no idea! I didn't think people got hostile?

Let's remember this is only the non-waiver trade deadline. Big waiver trades have been made in the past. Teams that think they are currently in contention and therefore hanging on to players may think otherwise in 2 or 3 weeks. And just because no trade has been announced yet doesn't necessarily mean none have been made. Trades aren't always announced immediately, especially if the Commissioner's Office has to be involved because of cash changing hands.

See truffles post regarding 95% of the board having their period at the same time. Funny and true.

60 bucks says this goes to lock status as well.

Hah... I figured it was dkwg's attempt to call me out. Doesn't really bother me.

Truffle's right, though.

It's one thing for an up and coming team like Milwaukee to stand pat. Their future is bright and secure; their core is all pre prime and cheap.

Our core is in the middle-end of their primes. We're an older, expensive team. We have no reason to play for 2009. If it took dealing Pie or Holliman, or whatever, to get an impact player, or if it required Hendry get creative, so be it. 99 years is enough time to wait.
