I wonder if they'd trade something valuable for Fontenot to fill their hole at 2B....

Burrell?

I said valuable...

Aaron Rowand is a free agent at the end of the season. Be nice to have him come our way. Send Fontenot, Jock/Pagan, and Petrick/Wuertz their way.

I hope you are being sarcastic. Trading our 2B, CF, and a decent relief pitcher for a 2 month rental of Aaron Rowand doesn't make sense even though I'm a big Rowand fan.

I'm not being sarcastic. How many chances do the Cubs have to win like we are now. This is a special season, like 2003.

2003 should have taught us that being foolish and reckless with the future for the sake of short-term success isn't a good idea.

Well, considering we should have made the WS in 2003 and should have made (at least) the playoffs in 2004, I would take that. Honestly, if we would have squirmed in in 2004, our starting pitchers may not have given up any runs in the playoffs. Prior, Wood, Z, and Maddux were on fire, even during that last week. Prior had a 16K game and LOST against the Reds for cripes sake.

I would take a repeat of 2003 and 2004 (with different endings) this year and next year, even if it meant that we would look like the White Sox do now in 2009.

Should have? They didn't. There's no should. They were a highly flawed team that had it's flaws exposed. They weren't some 100 win juggernaut that ran across a fluke opponent. It would be one thing if short-term gambles guaranteed success no matter how reckless they were for the future. But often times short-term gambles don't even achieve the expected result, which leaves you coming up short now and in the future.

Example, letting a tired pitcher pitch longer than he should makes him more likely to be ineffective right now, and susceptible to problems later on.

I would definitely trade Fontenot-Jacque/Pagan-Petrick for Aaron Rowand. I wouldn't want to part with Wuertz but Petrick I have no problem using in a trade.

I realize that, including this year, he's only been over an 800 OPS in three of his seven years but we wouldn't necessarily be picking him up for the future. Rowand has a .922 OPS this year and would be a great addition to the team espeically for the price above. I mean, there's no Pie listed. No Murton. No quality pitching prospect.

Everybody wants Jacque traded anyway and Pagan isn't an everyday player. Petrick is just a relief pitcher and I don't think anybody is going to argue that Fontenot has 'All-Star' written all over him. Plus he's 27. If you can get Rowand for cheap, do it.

EDIT: Though I think it would take more than that to get Rowand but I may be wrong.

Exactly, and it's not like we'd be losing our second baseman; Mark DeRosa is our second baseman. Fontenot has just gotten a ton of playing time there on account of using a versatile DeRosa as a plug for other injured slots, etc.

Depends on whether the Phils think they are totally going to be out of it now or not and depends on what they'd like to get out of Rowand. If they keep Rowand till the end of the season and he goes somewhere else in the free agency, I believe they get some compensation picks in next year's draft. So it's whether they think what we could give them would be more valuable than those compensation picks.
