Has there been a Cubs - Brewers head to head (player) comparison thread? The Cubs could be only one game out by end of night as Brewers lost to the Reds (in the 10th)...yeah!!

I know the Cubs and Reds both have super easy schedules the rest of the year so it will come down to talent.

Who do you all think is the most talented of the two?

i still think the brewers are a better team on paper, though our starting pitching has turned out better than theirs

I sort of felt that the Brewers should be a better team too. Both teams have had some players work out better than expected. I guess which team looks better on paper varies depending on which players you expect to come down to earth, and which you expect to maintain their level of play. Clearly, you'd expect young players on the Brewers to be more likely to maintain an elevated level of production than vets with established patterns like Marquis. But the Brewers aren't infallible. Look how far JJ Hardy has fallen from the start of the season.

The Cubs aren't the best team in the league, but they may be better than some give them credit for.

EDIT: Also, as has been noted, position by position matchups are really mostly for fun, not determining a superior team.

I don't take much stock out of head to head comparisons.

I think the Cubs are more talented, but also more flawed. They have worse age/injury issues with more guys likely near the end of their careers whom they need to still be productive. Milwaukee clearly has the better offense. Cubs have better pitching. But since I believe pitching is less consistent than hitting the Cubs advantage may be a little more unstable than the Brewers' advantage. But obviously either team could win this thing.

I'm not convinced Milwaukee has a better offense than the Cubs. They have scored 22 more runs, but have also played in 3 more games. Equalize the games and the Cubs are ~8 Runs less on the season.

They might have a slightly better offense, but I wouldn't call it significantly better or obvious.

I still think there's a very real chance that both the Cubs and Brewers make the playoffs -- perhaps the single likeliest combination is the Cubs, Brewers, Mets and Dodgers. The NL East and West are stronger divisions, all in all, than the NL Central, and the intra-division remaining schedule will probably reward the Cubs and Brewers, while hurting the Padres, D-Backs, and Braves.

.261 .328 .446

.270 .329 .410

A 35 point differential in team OPS is pretty significant. A team OPS+ of 109 to 97.

There's a significant gap.

The same difference in ERA+, 116 to 104.

Brewers fall to the Reds again today. If all goes right tonight the Cubs could be leading the Wild Card and only 1 game out in the division.

Cubs are tied for the 2nd fewest losses in the NL. What a turn of events.

Fixed.

Yep. Mets have 44 losses; Cubs, Brewers, Dodgers, and Padres all have 46 (pending the outcome of tonight's games).
