I have always wondered why he isnt an OFer. Good speed, Long legs. He seems to be a natural in the OF. Was he ever an OFer? Does he not have the ability to judge fly balls? Is his arm that bad?

For some of the out of the box thinking like adding Troy Glaus to play SS. This kind of move seems a lot more realistic. I am not saying the Cubs should. It just seems more realistic.

Bold #1 - Because he was (still is, kinda) an amazing 1B.

Bold #2 - When did you see him play OF?

Maybe he's talking about him tracking balls into short right field.

If we're going outside the box enough to trade for a 1B(Teixeira!) and move Lee to the OF, it might be a better allocation of resources just to trade Lee. His value to another team as a 1B is greater than his value to us as an OF because of his defense. He also has a large contract, and there's the thing about him not hitting for very much power. He'd make a great centerpiece for A-Rod if you had Teixeira in hand...

I can't fathom Hendry having the guts to trade Lee.

You honestly think he's not going to bounce back? Someone else broke their wrist and had a poor power year the following year only to return the year after (I can't remember who it was right now).

Some guys return to form or near it, but even then if often takes a good amount of time to do so. Honestly, Lee is a perfect #2 hitter right now. I don't see that as a bad thing so long as we find another #3 with a little more punch.

I don't think you can guarantee it will come back in the slightest. Considering all his other abilities it's not making him some sort of drag on the payroll or team, but if we're moving him to the OF(and negating one of the aforementioned other abilities), then it might be time to re-evaluate.

Lee's power days may in fact be over, but as long as he is putting up a .400 OBP he's fine in my book. I think he might still be good 25 HRs per yr after this year. Heck, he could get hot in the next two months and do that this year.

Again I am not even remotely saying we should move him to the OF. I was just wondering why he was never an OFer. Also he is an amazing 1b I agree. However it is 1b. As Elaine asked Keith Hernandez "Dont they put the bad players at 1b?"

When I say he seems like a natural OFer, I am going by his athletism and body type. Truth is most 1bman get stuck there because they have failed in other places or are catchers who can hit. My question is did DLee fail at another position? or was he on a team with a glut of outfielders and got put at 1b for that reason? I guess it is more of of DLee history question.

Someone doesn't have to be at 1B just because they suck everywhere else. Some guys are 1st baggers because they're really, really, REALLY good at it, like Lee. Sure, he could be decent in the OF, but I think he's likely much better at 1B due to a lot of the skills you're talking about.

Good speed and long legs is the makings of a good OF if he's 6'2" or below. But Derrek is 6'6". There's not a natural looking 6'6" OF alive on this planet.

Oh yeah, and you don't move the best defensive 1B in the league to OF because another player is acquired.

He probably got put there in HS because he was so tall and just developed a comfortability.

I've really questioned this lately (this season). Derrek has missed a lot of balls that he has made easily in the past. He really looks a step or two slow. As much as I questioned everyone touting Pujols' defense, he really is quite good.

I too, can't imagine trading my favorite player in sports.

You think he MIGHT be good for 25 HR/year after this year, and you go on to say you think he might hit 19 HR in two months this year?

If Lee hits 19 in the next two months, this team will win the division for sure. I have a feeling Soriano is about to go on a tear. Aramis is playing better than ever. If DLee can get going or Jim can deal for another legitimate bat, I like our chances of running away with this thing.

Mark Grace is another example of that. They also make others better (Shawon Dunston in the case of Grace, Aram for Lee). I have doubts that Aram would have improved so much that he's now mentioned as a Gold Glove candidate without Lee at 1B.
