Any hear ESPN 1000 late last night? They said a deal is "taking shape" between the Cubs and Reds to acquire Griffey. They also said the Cubs have no interest in Dunn. Pie and Murton could be involved and well as a possible 3rd team that would get Bronson Arroyo in the deal. Nothing would be announced until after the Cubs/Reds series.

This makes Griffey's "I really can't say anything right now" quote a bit more interesting, he may know what's going on. It's definitely that time of year ;).

I'll believe it when I see it. Those guys will pretty much say anything. Don't get me wrong though, I'll be hoping like crazy until it does or does not happen.

You're clearly a legit poster around here, but I'd still like to confirm from others what was said... hope you understand :)

rumors spread like wildfire, for sure. But I'd like to think that saying a deal is "taking shape" would have something behind it. Maybe I'm just naive, though. :)

Fair enough. I'll consider a "legitimate rumor" -- not that that means a whole lot

If they can't sign Z, how would they get the OK to spend 30 million on Griffey?

It's 20 million (of which the Trib would be paying $4 mil.) if they don't exercise the '09 option: ~$4 mil. this year, $12.5 mil. next year, and a $4mil. buyout. $32.5 mil. if they picked up the option. I'd hope that the Reds would be picking up some part as well (or taking on Jones or Eyre in the deal).

While it's no slam-dunk, that's a much less significant commitment than signing Z to a mult-year contract.

I have nothing to base this on other than a hunch, but I think it's going to happen.

I think Griffey would make the Cubs a legitimate WS contender, but throwing both Pie and Murton in the deal is a steep price considering Griffey's age and contract - particularly so if it involves any significant pitching prospect (e.g., Gallagher or Veal).

Well, if it is a 3 team deal, then it would be likely that a prospect would be heading back to the Cubs from this 3rd team. I also would hope that if the Cubs send both Pie and Murton that they shouldn't have to send one of their top pitching prospects, and they get at least one mid-level prospect back in the deal from someone along with Griffey.

Agreed, but given the state of the Reds starting pitching and Arroyo rumored in the deal, you'd think they'd have to be getting some pitching in return.

My guess is that Murton or Pie would be going to the 3rd team because the Reds have Hamilton, Dunn, Freel, and a couple of decent outfield prospects.

True, but even if it's

Cubs: Griffey

3rd team: Arroyo, Murton

Reds: Pie, ?

It seems to me that the 3rd team would have to send most of the pitching. They are the ones who haven't paid a heavy price yet, and they've received 2 good players.

I'm trying to think who might want Arroyo-the Phillies maybe? the Mets?

Ah...That's a bit better. Thanks for the clarification.

If Pie and Murton are involved in getting Griffey AND we cannot sign Big Z. Beyond this year doesn't look good. I still am hoping Pie is CF'er of the future w/ Murton as well. Call me dumb.

Dumb. JK.

I'm not big in any way on trading Pie, but at the same time, if we think we can add that big piece that could make the difference between winning the division and playing golf in October, I say you gotta roll the dice. I'm sure Hendry, if these rumors are true, would probably do his best to hold on to Pie, but considering that he thinks Colvin is the second-coming of Jim Edmonds, I'm thinking he might gamble.

Depending on the details, it might not be the best thing for the future of the franchise.

But Hendry needs this trade. It's probably his last significant act as the GM of the Cubs. If it works out it possibly saves his job under new ownership.

Whether the Reds have any interest is debatable. I'd say it's even unlikely. However, I'd be surprised if Hendry isn't working on it.

I guess if it's true then it helps explain why Murton is here but basically riding the pine...he can just walk over to the other dugout after the game is over.

At least that's what I want to tell myself when it looks like he's not getting the start yet again today.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought McDonough said there were no restrictions. I know we have gone back and forth on this pretty much all season, but didn't he say that last week (or two) in regards to the trading deadline?

In other words, a definite maybe. :D

If true, the aftermath of today's game would be more important than the outcome of the game itself.

Pure conjecture but maybe, huge maybe the 3rd team is the Braves......we end up with Jr and Salty. The Braves get the much needed pitching in Arroyo maybe Gallagher from us. Reds get Murton or Pie?

The Braves would still have the prospects to grab Tex from Texas.

If not the Braves who could the 3rd team be?

I suggested this last week in the "BCB Rumor on Adam Dunn" thread, and was pretty much called an idiot for suggesting it, but for some reason it made sense to me.

Davhern finally got me off that belief but it has stuck in the back of my mind that the deadline date and this series fall close enough together it just might be. Here's hoping.

To say "nothing will be announced," though, if that was the wording (and intended meaning by ESPN 1000's source), this doesn't make sense. If a deal/off is that close to being done, i.e. worth announcing, they would finish it, or they would pull the players involved.

I dunno...the Cubs are in contention this year. If they make the playoffs, I don't see a new owner ditching Hendry.

i really really really doubt that reds trade griffey before he hits 600, and that won't be before the non-waiver deadline.

what's more is that i really really really doubt that the reds trade griffey to the cubs, who can't even afford to re-sign their best pitcher.

I agree. They would ride him out for another year. I imagine it would take a while to evaluate everything.

If he has been talking to the front office about wanting out I think they will let him go.

they don't draw very well as it is, though. yesterdays game was the 4th largest in GAB history--a late june game against a team that's never really been any kind of rival to the reds. and that's only because of cubs fans.

they need griffey.
