"Several teams mention that the Cubs seem to be hanging around the periphery of most talks, trying to figure out ways to make the deals they want without taking on any money. One possibility that I heard was moving Jacque Jones and a prospect for Jeff Conine."

Jones AND a prospect? I wouldn't want Conine for just Jones OR a prospect. I wouldn't want him at all! He's 41 and hitting terrible this year. If this is Jim's answer to the RF situation, then he has officially lost his mind. Not to mention that he's only played 1 game at RF this year and the rest at 1B.

Assuming Conine isn't signed through next year, this would be a solid way to get rid of the committment to Jones in 2008 and fill the RH bench need. I don't think this would be viewed as a way to solve RF. Assuming Baltimore is happy with a marginal Cubs prospect, I could see the value in such a deal.

Just figured that one out. Point still stands, though I'm not sure Cincy would be as willing to take back Jones.

Maybe they'll take Eyre, though, since they love relief pitchers. :D

I think Hendry has been linked to Conine every season since Vietnam ended.
At least as long as the Marlins have been in existance.

I don't know why the Cubs would want to worry about upgrading the bench/marginal talent (although I can undstand that that IS a Hendry move).

They need a starting RF or SS. They need one fast.

Wasn't Hendry also chasing Barrett for a while before he ended up getting him? Seems like Hendry gets tunnel vision sometimes. With Barrett it worked...with Conine..... :?

depending on the prospect going the Reds way I would do this in a heartbeat, Connie can play three postions , is a veteran right handed power bat off the bench. By trading Jones and Izturiz the Cubs will have gained more payroll felxability to make other moves.

Was there a lot of conversation about Hendry wanting Kendall? I didn't hear it.

I suppose you are right. I didn't really think about it financially and instead just assumed this would be the upgrade needed to our offense. If it frees up some cash for a bigger move, I'd be all for it.

I remember it around 2004 but not much before or after.

I like the first part of that article that talks about the Cubs hanging around most trade talks. At least we know Hendry is looking to make a deal.

If the Reds were to trade Conine for Jacque, it would have to mean they are moving Griffey or Dunn.

The Reds can keep Conine...The Cubs will take Griffey for Murton, Eyre, Petrick or Gallegher.

The Cubs will take it, but the Reds won't.
