Ok, I admit I'm up late and a bit bored...

but I decided to look up the players involved in the Pierre trade.

This season, Sergio Mitre has a 2.76 ERA, 1.23 WHIPand a 57/19 K/BB ratio.

I miss Sergio. Crying or Very sad

Well, Renyel Pinto isn't having a tremendous season, but would look a lot better than Scott Eyre in the pen.

I guess the same goes for Nolasco.

it was a terrible trade.

of course if we use the same criteria to evaluate Mitre as we do Marquis, it doesn't look nearly as bad.

Looks even worse if you think that Mitre may have netted us Salty....

Nah. Mitre wouldn't be the guy. Atlanta would want a guy like Lincecum who is in his first year. Mitre has too much service time.

Fun with VORP:

Pierre's 2006 VORP: 18

2006

Nolasco: 6.7

Mitre: -1.5

Pinto: 7.4

Total 12.6

2007

Nolasco: -5.5

Mitre: 20.8

Pinto: 6.3

Total 21.6

I don't understand what you're saying here.

Neither do I. Mitre seems much better than Marquis.

Only a small fraction of how good the Lee and Ramirez trades were.

It was a bad trade, but if the question is of degree ... its not exactly going to go down as one of the great robberies of our era. In fact, I would hazzard to say outside of a few Marlin and Cub fans who closely pay attention to the players involved, the trade probably doesn't even register.

I don't understand the Pierre/Mitre VORPs. If you look at what 2007 Mitre has done relative to 2006 Pierre then it shouldn't even be close

VORP is a counting stat, and the 2007 season is barely half over.

it's not a matter of comparing the two players. it's a matter of evaluating Mitre's current season. if we do the same with Mitre as we do with Marqui, we come to the conclusion that Mitre's season, while still very very good without, is largely attributed to luck.

while Marquis' numbers allegedly would be much worse if you take luck out of the equation, Mitres numbers lwere similar to Marquis' actual numbers (when I made this post) if you take luck out of his equation. Mitre doesn't strike anybody out, is walking far fewer batters than at any point of his career which is likely to balance out, is allowing far fewer homers than one would expect from comparing the % of flyballs allowed with infield fly percentage or with % of flyballs to this point in his career, is allowing tons of unearned runs, and has a FIP well above his actual ERA. etc etc etc

many of the arguments that can be made to detract from Marquis' current performance and used to predict future performance can also be applied to Mitre. but that's not done because it wouldn't contribute the the 18 month Juan Pierre bitch-a-thon.

Mitre is 26, it's not a surprise for him to be outperforming his previous MLB performance/peripherals, especially since he's getting an extended stay in a rotation for the first time ever. Mitre was a low BB guy and a very low HR guy in his minor league career, these peripherals aren't completely out of left field. Even with some regression he's a serviceable starter under team control for cheap. That's why it still makes the Pierre trade look awful.

I don't think people would be complaining about signing Marquis at all if it was for a $300K deal that could be dropped at anytime or renewed for a couple years around that same price.

One of the most annoying things about the Pierre trade is that he was riding an impressive hot streak going into late July, so Hendry had a good chance to recoup lost value by shopping him. Instead Pierre started every game in a lost season and then walked. This made a bad trade even worse.
