because the trib is a public company, don't they have a legal obligation to sell to the highest bidder?

Tribune will go private before the sale is completed. Therefore that takes care of this little problem.

Actually it doesn't take care of the problem. The Trib will be owned by a Trust on behalf of Tribune employees. The Trustee (an independent institution) has a fiduciary duty to the beneficiaries of the Trust (i.e., the employees).

If Cuban submits a significantly better bid, MLB will be in a tough position - particularly if the details leak. Considering many of those employees are members of the press, I wouldn't want to be the Trustee or Selig if MLB disqualifies the highest bid.

They will do just what they did in Boston to get the ownership in place that they want. They will cobble together a group that can offer the highest bid.

They already regret Trust me...they don't love him. His behavior is an embarassment to MLB.

Where are you getting this information from?

They let him buy the Expos to fold them and then gave him and John Henry a sweatheart deal to exchange the Red Sox for the Marlins, with MLB (the other 29 clubs) holding the bag for folding the Expos.

Jeff Loria is like the Bud Selig's Grimm Reaper.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, baseball survives because it is a great game. It survives in spite of the owners. The idiot in Tampa built is stadium in St. Petersburg and then aleinated his entire fan base. Selig got the City to foot the bill for the Brewers and then mismanaged them into serious trouble. I could go on and on. Loria fits in well with the crowd.

Because as I told you...I have sources and very good ones and no I cannot provide you with that information because I like being employed. Having a paycheck is kind of a nice luxury to have.

FWIW, Tropicana Field existed pre-D-Rays

Yeah, it was built to try to entice the White Sox and then the Giants at different times.

Believe what you will but if you had an idea what I do for a living, you would believe me. Ask Bruce Miles if I am credible. He will vouch for me.

As long as that ownership is capable of winning, I'll be alright with it.

I just wish these guys would open up a little imagination for once, and not shut out Cuban just because he's not a member of the 'club'

RedIvyCub is a reliable poster.

This guy/girl could be Gary Hughes or he/she could be some unemployed carpenter. I couldn't care less and I'm not inclined to believe some random poster on a fan message board.

The behavior of MLB officals is very clear, as they've repeatedly stated that they want a baseball team in South Florida and they've done nothing to disuade Loria from making a mockery of the Marlins the same way he made a mockery of the Expos.

I don't care what the person's "sources" say.

Another factor to keep in mind is MLB's antitrust exemption isn't on very sturdy legal ground these days, and Cuban has the type of resources to mount a legal challenge.

I don't see how the Bush Supreme Court ruling against someone's right to sell their business to the highest bidder.

It's sad because if they didn't get dismantled every time they won they'd probably win that division every year.

I can imagine this situation would develop to this point, but if it did, I'm sure the timetable on it would preclude Cuban from taking over by the beginning of 08.

Probably. Wouldn't you take the 2 trophies though? I would.

A lot of their problems would be solved if "in the best interest of baseball" Selig would force Loria to sell. The city of Miami has twice offered to give Loria land by the Orange Bowl to build a new park, but Loria wants Dade County to pay for the park.

It would *seem* that if Loria was that much of an embarassment to MLB they'd step in and do something. Instead they let him and his son in law do their damndest to destroy the fan base. Fortunately, they have some great baseball people in the GM and his staff.

From my perspective it appears as though Miami just doesn't have a real good fanbase. But I can see why they might have a reason to not turn out if the ownership is tearing things up all the time. One thing though, during their 2003 playoff run they didn't turn out until the World Series; the Cubs had almost as many fans as the Marlins did for Florida's home games. It's hard for me to say the fans are supportive when that kind of thing happens. Marlins were on a tear leading all the way up to the playoffs, too.

No skin off my nose, cubinNY. You can choose to believe me or not. Doesn't matter to me. But I know as a fact that Loria is loathed and they gave him the Marlins hoping the whole thing would sink without a stadium deal and to help John Henry get out from under the Marlins.

Raisin's word is good enough for me.

So how much DO you know (and actually say)?

Like for instance, could you tell us anything new related to issues such as Cubs taking on salary this season or the sale?

Sadly I am as much in the dark as you for the most part. They are really keeping this whole deal on the down low right now. I do know that they are accepting applications which is obvious to everyone. I also know that Tribune is preparing their package to present to prospective owners.

From my understanding, they will try and take the company private prior to the sale of the team which will be finalized prior to the Zell transaction being completed for the purchase of the Tribune Company (lots of FCC issues involved with cross ownership of media outlets right now). This is due to the fact that Zell has his ownership interest in the Sox and as we all know, ownership interest in two clubs in not allowed. John Henry had to divest his interest in the Marlins prior to his joining the group to purchase the Red Sox. John Henry was added to that group to make it a credible bidder from my understanding of things.

I also suspect that the winning bid will be someone that no one here has even thought of who will fly under the radar until the deal is close. That often happens. And no, it won't be Jim Anixter because he wasn't allowed to buy it from the Wrigley's 25 years ago so he won't be allowed to buy now no matter who his group is.

Fair enough. If you are allowed or if you have any knowledge, or just a good guess, what are the odds of Cuban becoming the owner of the Chicago Cubs as of this point, based on what everybody knows?

She said she suspects it will be someone nobody's even thought of yet, so that rules out Cuban as someone she thinks is likely.

I'm going to pretend that Cuban is the next owner until it's proven otherwise. It helps me sleep at night.

Well done. that might work better for me, than the bottle of patron i have been using.

Yep. He's our new owner until proven otherwise, brilliant!
