Floyd will be limited to pinch-hitting duties this weekend because he hyperextended his right elbow. The injury was not from his crash into the outfield wall in Washington.

Piniella said the injury is "slight, nothing serious," but bothers him when he extends his arm. Floyd said he may get a cortisone shot this weekend, and then take advantage of the All-Star break to rest.

The veteran outfielder is heading into the break feeling fairly healthy.

"I want to be able to play a lot and I want to be able to contribute, but I thought [Piniella] did a great job of using me," Floyd said. "Of course, I'd like to play more, and with the way the team is playing now, you take what you can get and take advantage of what you've got. I'm very happy with the way things have turned around here, and I just want to contribute and give our fans something to cheer about."

BTW, one of the notes from yesterday said that Ward may get the start tonight in RF.

Oh for the love of God don't do it.

Its not that bad of an idea. He mainly played RF last year anyway. He's not going to be considerably worse than Cliff.

Cliff has somewhat of an arm and Ward has no arm or speed

I may get flamed at for saying this, but I though we missed Uncle Cliffy's bat a bit this weekend.

I can't agree. We faced two LH starters where Floyd wouldn't have played anyway. The game he would've played, we won and scored 7 runs, and Ward went 1 for 3 with a walk and RBI in RF. Plus, Floyd wasn't exactly hot coming in, he was 3 for his last 17 with a walk and no XBH's.

Let me the first to say not really then :D

Seriously though, the only day he would have started was Saturday, and Ward was 1 for 3 with a RS, an RBI, and a BB, so I don't think the Cubs really missed Floyd this weekend. They have to find another bat that can hit left-handers well, if that be a big bat that can hit both sides well or a platoon player that kills left-handers. The offense is ok against right-handers (above average, an upgrade could make it great) but it is just terrible against left-handers (under a .300 OBP now against left-handers), and so if the Cubs don't have the resources to get a big bat they at least need to go find a player who only hits left-handers well and get them.

Murton hit well against lefties and righties last year, over .300 against lefties

And now it looks like Floyd is going to try a cortisone shot to help alleviate the pain.

Link.

Cliff Floyd will receive cortisone shots in his right elbow and shoulder Monday to try and alleviate the pain that has sidelined him the last three games.

"I'll have four days off to relax and hopefully it'll kick in for the second half," he said.

It's possible Floyd could be placed on the DL when the second half begins.

If it's not OK, the Cubs can backdate Floyd on the disabled list to July 6 and give him more time to recover.

And call up either Murton or Cedeno, GREAT, I'm all for either of the two.
