I still think the Cubs need to win about 25 championships this century to be considered lucky.

I wonder if the Cubs do that will they be considered the top "Who's Now" by ESPN in 3000?

I strongly predict his return would probably be my most emotional moment as a Cubs fan.

Seriously, I hope the Wrigley fans give him a 10 minute standing ovation the first day he takes the mound.

Sadly, it will probably be the opposite.

Mine will still be watching game five in Atlanta.

Now, if this year's team advances to the World Series, I think that would surpass how I felt that night in Atlanta.

I also think Kerry lost too much weight. He was always stocky but never obese. He looks way too thin now.

This morning on ESPN 1000, Silvy said that Wood has lost something like 48 pounds??? I wonder if that could have anything to do with his heart condition and needing to carry less weight to make it easier on his body? That's just a complete guess though.

One of the articles linked in this thread says hes lost 48 lbs. What heart condition are you talking about?

He has that "hole in the heart" condition.

It was diagnosed, I believe, around the time he tore is UCL and had Tommy John in 99.

I believe you're right about when it was diagnosed. If I remember correctly it was stated that he'd eventually need surgery to correct it, but not for many years.

Hate to say it, but Kerry is screwed now that the national media are picking up on this. Buster Olney just did a quick bit on Kerry's progress during Sports Center... I wish Kerry could just fly below the radar & suddenly make a miraculous appearance in the Cubs bullpen mid-August...

How did Woody look today? Any reports?

Wood: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 SO, 1 E

This may well be his last start at Mesa. Sounds like he'll be moved up in the minors.

Good enough for me.

Well I'm leaving on vacation today, and I won't be able to keep updating this thread for those interested, so whoever actually wants to should feel free.

Woody on Comcast:

"About 4-5 weeks ago it wasn't responding and we were running out of options. Then one day I woke up and it felt good and it's felt good since then."

That's a paraphrase.

I'm not sure if I feel good about that. If it just magically started feeling better, then I'm fearful it might 'magically' start feeling bad again just as quickly.

That seems possible. But if he's been pain free for a month, then maybe he'll be able to stay that way for a while, as long as he keeps treating the injury.

I'm pulling for KW but with comments like that I just think he's most likely done.

I just hope Kerry didn't wake up that morning and decide to ignore the pain. Hard to believe that he could hit 95 if that were the case though.

When he was pitching with pain, an article said he had been pitching at 45 mph. Whether that meant that he couldn't do more than a toss, or he just couldn't throw it hard even from the mound, I think it was pretty clear that, if he was still feeling pain, he wouldn't have a chance to pitch effectively at all, even in Mesa. That makes me think he probably isn't pitching through the pain.

Yup - I have the exact same feeling. I can't think of any other pitcher who was facing surgery who decided to treat it instead and saw signs of improvement but then one day "woke up" to find himself pain free. Medical miracles are rare and let's face it, we're talking Cubs and Kerry Wood.

If/when he returns, I'm sure I won't be the only one holding my breath on every pitch he makes just waiting for the one that puts him back under the knife and/or ends his career.

Good luck though Kerry!

I doubt it. Kerry Wood is probably the most universally loved player the Cubs have had since Sandberg

He's not that loved, but he is loved.

Well who would you put ahead of Wood on that list?

Sosa used to be. Not anymore.

You mean since Sandberg only? How about Dawson? The Hawk is still loved here.
