I think it's the right call, but Hill is leaving the curve up and hanging it. If he could bury it in the lower part he'd get the K.

 

He's gotten most of his Ks on FBs when the hitters have been expecting the curve, that's a telling sign about his curve today.

He has struggled with his curve recently. He leaves it up in the zone. You can't do that with major league hitters.

 

Even worse, he's letting guys get on base in front of the big hits.

 

He needs to figure it out. We all know he can be a very good pitcher, but he cannot afford to hang that many curves especially when he's ahead of the hitters. His fastball isn't good enough to be his K pitch, so he needs to be able to put that curve where he wants it.

If Hill and/or Marshall continue to struggle, what sort of options do we have in AAA and AA?

 

None. And Hill should have a pretty long leash, seeing as he's *still* the Cubs second best pitcher this season.

 

Rich Hill's ERA is now 3.84. Ted Lilly's is 3.84 as well but has been a bit more consistant. I'd say Hill is our 4th best pitcher behind Z, Lilly, Marquis

i'm not sure why you guys are surprised... the cubs haven't given hill any run support since april. When he starts, the Cubs will hardly score at all. You should be expecting this by now, regardless of who the opposing pitcher is.

 

I know you're trying to defend Rich, but he's been pretty mediocre for some time now.

He had a great April which is bringing down his numbers.

 

April: 1.77 ERA, 0.87 WHIP

May: 4.66 ERA, 1.31 WHIP

June: 4.32 ERA, 1.17 WHIP

 

But hes got the 10th best whip in the ML! Never mind the fact that he has been average or below average outside of his spectacular start. But thats ok, people can keep living off his one month, and making excuses for the rest of the year, its not Richs fault at all.

 

This logic can extend to Zambrano as well.

 

Whats your point? I havent seen anybody going around and constantly making excuses for why Carlos sucked. However, with Rich, nothing is his fault and he is God and can do no wrong.

 

My point is you have to look at the season as a whole. Rich has been inconsistent but overall he's been above average (more so than Z overall although he's gotten much better of late).

 

I think its important that Z struggled early, and obviously made the adjustments a ML pitcher needs to make. Where as Hill was dominant early, and has yet to make the proper adjustments to get back to the dominance.

 

I disagree.

 

He's been bad in his last few starts but Hill went through a down period between May 11 and May 22 (3 starts) where he surrendered 5, 4, and 5 runs only to follow it with four starts where he gave up 0, 3, 1, and 3 runs (ending on June 12th).

 

His most recent starts were 5 runs to SD, 1 to the Sox, 5 to MIL, and 6 today. Obviously, he needs to make some more adjustments but it's not like he hasn't done it before.
