CHICAGO--It didn't take long for Mark Holliman to get it. He's not only on a fast track, but he's a quick study as well.

The fireballer from Mississippi began his professional career with his pitches blazing. But prospects cannot live on fastballs alone, and Holliman went 8-11, 4.38 for high Class A Daytona in 2006. It wasn't bad, but there was room for improvement.

He showed that improvement right away in 2007. The righthander opened his season at Double-A Tennessee by going 7-5, 2.49 in his first 87 innings. The 23-year-old opened a few eyes early.

Sean Gallagher, Holliman's Smokies teammate who was called up by the Cubs in early June, noticed the difference right away. He said Holliman was like a new man in 2007.

"It looked like in his first year, he tried to blow everything by everyone," Gallagher said. "He tried to overpower everyone. But when you start getting to the high levels, everyone can hit a fastball. But if you are locating your fastball and secondary pitches, they can't hit it.

"This year, he is throwing all of his pitches for strikes. He's spotting up his fastball great. He's throwing his slider, curveball and changeup all for strikes any time and any part of any count that he wants. He's successful with it."

The Cubs put Holliman, a third-round pick in 2005, on the fast track from the start and he's already in Double-A ball.

"This is only his second full season and we've liked what we've seen," farm director Oneri Fleita said. "You tend to throw the first year out because sometimes when a young player has a sense of failure he tries to win two games in his next start. Plus it's getting used to pitching every fifth game, the travel, a 140-game schedule. All of that.

"After the season, we wanted him to go home and prepare for another long season and he has done that."

Will this hot start carry over to the whole season? The Cubs think if he plays to his strengths, he will have a chance to have an outstanding campaign.

"It's no secret that his game is getting hitters out on contact," Fleita said. "You like to see him get hitters out on four pitches or less."

18-year old Mexican righty Oswaldo Martinez (7 IP, 3.86 ERA, 6 K/0 BB, .296 BAA) gets the start for Mesa.

Hmm, looking at the Mesa box:

Josh Donaldson had a big hitting game - 2/4, double, triple and a BB but he gave up 6 stolen bases (after throwing out 2 of 3 before today's game). Ryan Harvey started his rehab at DH and went 1/5 with a K. Kevin Kreier, one of the bonus babies from last year's draft got on the Mesa roster and pitched an inning (he did badly, but at least he's gotten into a game).

Also, Tyler Colvin went 0/4 with 3 Ks today.

today was a sad day for me - word came during the Chiefs game today that the Cubs have released Ryan Norwood. I know Dope's on the 40, but I had a tough time liking this decision by the organization. He's one of the good guys, so do hope he gets picked up by another organization shortly.

Nate, any idea who the Chiefs are getting for the roster?

Jerry Blevins = good.

AA: 24.1 IP, 0.74 ERA, 29 K/3 BB, .169 BAA

A+ and AA: 48 IP, 0.56 ERA, 61 K/8 BB, .164 BAA

And he's no LOOGY - .179 BAA against righties at AA (.148 against lefties).

Step 1: Drop Ohman or Eyre.

Step 2: Add Blevins.

Step 3: Profit.

just a couple thoughts...

1. Dope is on fire. OPS over 1.000 for the 2nd half (51 AB so far). His back is against the wall as far as being a prospect goes, nice to see he's fighting a little bit.

2. Donaldson had a nice day at the plate.

3. My guess is Ty Wright or Donaldson to Peoria.

Or Leon Johnson.

Good call. I guess I hadn't seen how well he was doing.

Another note: After looking at the box score, it has Donaldson as 1-3 with a 2b, and a 2nd catcher (Sabates) with a 3b. Not sure where the 2-4 came from, but I'm kinda interested to know what the deal was.

Thanks for the note. Originally they had Donaldson going the whole game with his and Sabates' AB combined for his line (which is incredibly rare in the AZL - most teams like to give the starting catcher only about 5 innings in the 100+ degree heat). The quality of the boxes for those AZL games aren't always the best (Laura posted a link to an Arizona Phil blog entry last week where the scorekeeper had to ask Phil what happened because he couldn't keep up with the PBP). Let me edit the first post.

Why cant Hoffpauir replace Ward in 2008 as the main lefty off the bench. His numbers are good and he handles the bat well (bb/k ratio). I like Ward and have no complaints but if Micah can do the job you control his rights much more than you do Wards.

Coats is having a fine year so far too. Might be nice trade bait.

Blevins is really tearing it up this year. How hard does he throw? He seems to have great location, as he's not walking anyone.

Cedeno, Soto, and Blevins should all be helping the Big League club sooner rather than later. Izturis, K. Hill, and Eyre should be gone.

He's at 92-94 mph, which is a big spike from last season.

He could be in the fold of things NEXT year, not this year. I would expect him to be in Iowa before too long now, as for his velocity, I have seen reports of him sitting at 90 and topping out at 92.
