Congrats to Ryan! That is a pretty amazing feat. Between A-Rod and Howard I'm hopefull that Bonds record* will only be temporary.

Too bad Howard didnt start his career till he was 25.

Yeah, you're better off hoping for Pujols (as a second guy along with ARod) to break it.

EDIT: Holy crap, Howard is actually older than Pujols. Granted, it's only two months, but still. I knew Howard was old but I figured Pujols had a year or two on him.

He probably has 5-7 years on Howard, we just don't truthfully know about it yet ;-).

Heh. I guess I should have said 'listed age'.

Yeah... Pujols is younger and has a lead of 166 HR right now. I'd say Howard has to be ranked well behind him.

The Phillies are morons for blocking Howard as long as they did.

not really... Jim Thome had a monster year in 2004, which was also the year that Howard broke out. All you can really criticize the Phillies for is having him in the minors for half of 2005, and during that time Thome was on the team.

Agree. And Thome's still a good player. He still gets on base nearly 1/2 the time he comes to the plate.

But he's a DH who maybe never should have been signed in the first place. Still glad the Cubs stayed away.

It'd be more accurate to say that the Phillies are geniuses for resolving said blockage by trading away Thome instead of Howard.

I'm glad the Cubs stayed away too. But when he signed, he still had a couple years left at 1B. Everyone knew he would be a DH by the middle of that contract. And the Phils got a couple good years out of him and traded him and got value in return. Unfortunately for them, they didn't win.
