They most certainly did NOT have to put Dempster on the DL. They could have simply cancelled or postponed Petrick's callup, or they could have sent Pagan down. Putting Dempster on the DL (unless it really is necessary because of the nature of the injury) gets the Cubs nowhere, because they'd still be at 11 pitchers and need to go through all this again tomorrow. There are definitely other options, so if Dempster really is placed on the DL it's because he's injured bad enough to miss that much time, not because of the botched trade.

This is bad. We need Dempster to keep the pen in order, as last night showed. For the next 10ish games, the Cubs are going to have to depend on relievers they aren't used to depending on (see Eyre's performance). Hopefully the starting pitching is solid until he gets back and we don't need to go deep into the pen.

They'll be at 11 pitchers, but all 6 of the relievers will be able to pitch. We hve effectively had a 5 man pen since Dempster was injured.

But if they cancelled Petricks callup then they'd really be screwed cause they would literally have like 3 pitchers available for tonights game.

My God, he needs to go on the DL just about as bad as Jacque does so why not just put JJ on the DL? I hate Hendry.

Jacque would never agree to go on the DL, and there's no injury to allow him to go on the DL. If the Cubs tried to make one up and Jacque contested it, it could become a really ugly situation.

"He said he felt it even jogging, and didn't see any way possible he could be ready by the weekend."

This certainly sounds like it was needed. Hopefully the club doesn't have to pitch Dempster the last day before the break (the day he is scheduled to come back) and he can come back after the All Star Break completely healthy.

Lidge has the same injury and he went on the DL. No reason to take any chances with your closer. We'll be fine until he gets back.

Hopefully. Even with the mini-shenanigans last night, I'd like to see Marmol in the closer role in the meantime.

From Cubs.com:
Now, the Cubs will go with Bob Howry, Carlos Marmol or even Will Ohman as their closer.

Will Ohman, are you kidding?

I'm sure Ohman will simply be used to close in situations like last night. They are just saying they'll play the matchups-if a couple of left-handers are up, they will use Ohman just like it was any other inning.

Oh okay. Why can't they say what they mean? Thanks for the translation.

Seems like it's going to be Marmol closing. Am I wrong here?

It's hard to tell. Lou has brought Howry in 3 times and Marmol twice. He might continue to alternate them and try to go with the fresher arm.

And Ohman once. Bullpen by committee.

Ohman was only in there because Marmol was having a rough day. If Marmol would have had a 1-2-3 inning, Ohman woudn't have pitched.

Ohman was in because a tough lefty was the tying run. It had little to do with Marmol's performance.

I had no problem with the move at all. Marmol was fine but Ohman does very well against lefties. .182BAA
