The Cubs optioned reliever Clay Rapada to Triple-A Iowa after Sunday's game and will activate Daryle Ward in time for Tuesday night's game at Texas.

Ward, who had a strained left hip, can play first base if Derrek Lee's suspension comes down soon. Mark DeRosa is also an option.

Knowing this was coming, I would have put Rapada in today's game to throw a couple of purpose pitches. Any suspension would just have to wait until he was recalled.

i think managers are hesitant to put rookies in that role.

look at what happened with sean tracey on the white sox last year. then again, piniella isn't as completely insane as guillen.

I would have just kept Rapada up and DFA'd Scott Eyre, but unlike our GM, I have 1/2 a brain.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be better to have a whole one????

It's not easy for every GM to eat $5.6M. That's how much the Cubs still owe Eyre for the remainder of 2007 and all of 2008.

Its also how much money we are paying Jones per year, or thereabouts. Think about what you could do with the 10M you are paying those 2 bozos.

Yes, the Cubs owe Jones $7M over the next year and a half.

What I could do or what Jim Hendry could do? Jim would just waste it.

I really wish it would have been gallagher sent down, I can't stand that he's up here wasting away and putting his arm through unnecessary strain for no reason.

And for the love of god, if your gonna call up marmol to be "the closer of the future" quit bringing him out before the 7th, let him handle the 7th, howry the 8th, and demp the 9th. I need holds in my fantasy league dangit.

I bet you're glad they brought him in before the 7th tonight though. :D

I love the "W" and i love the way he pitched tonight, but in all seriousness, the guy was doing well in my great state as a starter and we brought him up to be groomed for closer and he's being used in anything but a 7th or 8th inning roll. I need holds darnit! Seriously tho, our pen is nasty if it goes Marmol, Howry, Demp. But not so good if it goes Eyre, Weurtz (who i used to think was the answer), howry, demp. Let's either use marmol as a great set up guy or move him back to AAA and let him pitch cause he's got some great stufff.

And for god's sake use a stupid AAAA for life guy as a bullpen guy and move gallagher back down, there's no point for that guy to have pitched 5 innings in 15 days for the big club when he's not ready to be a starter (which he should be long term)

Whoops, probably shouldn't post after $1 you call it at summit all night.

Speaking of Marmol, his stuff was filthy tonight.

As the Rangers' announcer said, he was Marmolous.

I don't put quotes in my signature, but if no one has already claimed it, I would like to be the (or one of the) founder of the Carlos Marmol BandWGN. This guy is ridiculous. I say after Dempster closes out the final out of the 2008 World Series for the Cubs, let him ride off into the Canadian sunset and make Marmol the closer for years to come...

Then Hendry needs to learn the meaning of "sunk cost".

Wuertz has good stuff as well. I think Wuertz/Marmol setting up Howry and then Dempster is a nice combination.

I know people love to hate him, but Ohman has been doing really well lately, especially against lefties. He's not someone who should just be ignored like Eyre.
