Pat said during today's broadcast that Ward is planning on rejoining the team during the Texas series next week and that Aram is going to swing a bat on Sunday. I was wondering who you guys thought would leave the team when these two come back.

I am assuming that one of the eight relievers will leave; hopefully Eyre, although it may be a young arm with options like Gallagher. I know that we don't have any takers for a trade involving Eyre but I'm not sure if we're just going to DFA Eyre.

Anyway, my real question involves the postion players. I am assuming that we would like to have five outfielders and so Jones and Pagan will remain on the team. We need to have two catchers, so Hill isn't going anywhere untill Blanco is back or another catcher is recalled. Given this the remaining options are Fontenot, Theriot, and Izzy. Fontenot has been amazing lately, but as far as I can see Theriot and Izzy are the only two on the team that can play shortstop. Is Lou going to be willing to have only one player on the team that can play shortstop, or is Fontenot likely the odd man out? Thanks in advance.

I would expect Rapada to be sent back down to Iowa. More than likely, he was only up as a precaution since Ohman worked so much Tuesday.

That's only one move. When Aram AND Ward are up, what position player goes?

Most likely Fontenot. We wouldn't need the extra IF anymore. Though since Lou apparently likes what he's seeing, I wouldn't be surprised to see Theriot sent down instead.

Yeah, I was hoping to see Izzy gotten rid of, but I don't think that it's gonna happen. If I were a betting man, I'd probably bet on Theriot. Although I guess Jones or Pagan could be done away with if we considered derosa to be our fifth outfielder (in addition to starting 2b.)

I think the second player to go will be Pagan. DeRosa and Theriot (and in a pinch Ward) can play OF if needed, and that makes the 5th OF not as necessary on this team.

Good news on Aram!

Could he ease back in as a DH in the CHW/TEX series?

he's not eligible to come off the DL until after the series with Tex, unless you're implying he'd be traded to either the Sox or Rangers and are questioning his eligibility for their series at the end of August

OK, I wasn't awhere of when he could come off the DL.

I have to believe Gallagher will get sent down at some point. It probably isn't great for his development to be put in the pen at this point. If they release Eyre he'll probably stay though. The position player getting sent down should be Izturis, Jones, or Pagan, but will most likely be Fontenot or Theriot.

Rapada will be gone. (AAA)

Pagan/Jones will be gone. (AAA-Pagan/DFA or traded-Jones)

With Theriot, Ward, and Fontenot all able to play OF (yes, Fontenot has played pretty much everywhere) we will be okay. Soriano, Pie, Floyd, Pagan/Jones, Ward, Theriot, DeRosa, Fontenot are all capable of OF duties.

2 catchers-Barrett, Hill

7 IF- Lee, DeRosa, Theriot, Ramirez, Fontenot, Izturis, Ward

4 OF- Soriano, Pie, Floyd, Pagan/Jones

5 SP- Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Marshall

7 RP- Dempster, Howry, Wuertz, Eyre, Ohman, Gallagher, Marmol

We get to keep our 12th arm and a good mix of players for IF/OF backups.

Anyone else love Pagan and his switch hitting abilities?

people love to hate Pagan, but I don't really see why:

.304/.371/.518/.889 with 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 12 K in 56 AB's.

Not sure what else you want from your 5th OF

Daryle Ward started his rehab with the I-Cubs yesterday (went 0/3 with a K as the DH) and he thinks his last day with Iowa will be Sunday.

He's had a great start to 2007. If he maintained anywhere even close to those numbers it would be a miracle. But he's had a pretty long career which suggests his numbers won't be anywhere near those levels. But he could be a decent 5th OF.

fine, but people gripe about him like he's terrible. if he regresses to the mean, fine, but i'll take this stat line while i've got it. damn piece better than what jock is doing

i'm not going to go digging up quotes, but he's often the first person people want to send down when discussing future transactions

The first people 99% of the people want gone is Jones, or maybe Eyre. Pagan has been on the list because he's more realistic, given his option status, and he's never been all that good.

I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill.
