Anyone got a report on Hernandez? I know he is still very young (20 I think??).

He's 18 all season long, turns 19 in October.

His numbers look pretty decent for pitching as an 18 yr old in Peoria.

Any one got the scouting report on him? Is he a power pitcher? Finesse?

Low 90s FB that has been described as a plus pitch, great curve and ok change. He has great control, especially for an 18-year old and he's 6'2, 165 lbs. I believe I read that he's expected (that is, the Cubs think) to get a few ticks more on the FB as he grows some more and gets bigger.

Hernandez is a significant prospect. He was effective last summer, and he's effective now. It isn't common for the Cubs to put a 17-year-old in the US, most stay in the DSL or VSL. That Hernandez was here last summer meant they had hopes.

The 165 weight, that's the same listing they had last year. Often it takes a while before those get updated.

I think the last time I can recall the Cubs having a prospect younger than Hernandez at full-A was Carlos Zambrano, who listed at 17.

Hope Hernandez works out. And that he stays healthy. At the rate he's going, he'll have a lot of innings under his belt by the time he turns 21.

Whatever kind of curve and fastball Hernandez has, neither appears to have much groundball movement. Like Veal and Atkins before him, he hasn't gotten a lot of groundouts. And it's almost seemed that on his more effective outings, he's gotten even fewer. That will be interesting to watch.

I'm not real sure what I think about groundball orientation. Normally you'd prefer it. And there's nothing better than a heavy groundball fastball. But, there are a lot of groundball oriented guys who give up plenty of HR's, too. The good pitches get grounders; the mistakes sometimes have nothing and get creamed. And, sometimes having a lot of air outs makes you think a guy is giving up a lot of solid fly balls, whereas he may actually be getting a good dose of easy popouts. And while groundballs are less likely to go for doubls and triples and never go over the wall, it's also true that air balls that don't go over the wall are a lot easier to defend. Lot's more errors on groundballs than flies, and it's not uncommon for groundball guys to give up a lot more unearned runs. Doesn't show on their ERA, but they are still real runs that cost games.

But, it's something to watch for.

Groundball stuff can also vary. Gallagher is kind of a weird case. At Peoria, he seemd a fairly flat, or fly-ball oriented guy. At Daytona and last year he was strongly groundball oriented. I was real happy about that, and at first hoped it meant he had a good slider going (early last year there was talk of reintegrating a slider into his mix) or that his fastball had some sink to it. This year, not much groundball oriented.

Craig, Nathan Baliva said that Hernandez is still rather skinny and still looks 165.

ETA:

well i wouldnt say he looks 14 but, yes he looks young. skinny too. listed at 165. plus change, good curve. threw both for strikes. made 1 mistake. he missed on the pitch to Parmelee for the double that was supposed to be out and away but it was down and in and he turned on it pulling it into the RF corner for a 2-run 2b. no walks, good control. I look forward to seeing him pitch on Thursday at home and see consistency. god knows we need it in our rotation these days. 11 starters in 40 games is not a good thing!

Dope with a 2-run HR and 19-year old Nate Samson with a 2-RBI double as Daytona leads it 6-1 in the 5th. Scott Taylor left the game after 3, not sure if he's hurt or not.

I must say it's annoying that game one isn't being broadcast on a day I do have the afternoon off from work.

Apologies. Darin Downs, not Mitch Atkins, is starting game two for Daytona. Daytona won game one 6-5.

Iowa down 2-0 in the third. Cedeño is 1/1 with a triple.

Tennessee up 6-1 in the 6th. Kevin Hart has racked up 8 Ks in 6 IP and Josh Kroeger has a solo HR.

Downs and Samardzija have each given up a run in 2 innings of work as Daytona is down 2-0 in fifth in game two.

Rough outing for Robert Hernandez (6 ER in 4 IP) but Yusuf Carter has 2 HRs and Peoria is tied at 6.

Ronny Cedeno is officially en fuego.

Now hitting .333 with an OPS well over 900. Absolutely murdering the ball the last 10 games or so. Slugging % will be over 500 if he can keep it going tonight with the triple he already has.

Only upsetting thing is 5 errors in 27 games. Dont need to start that nonsense again.

Where is Murton? I thought he was at Iowa?

He was sent down yesterday, doubt he'd get there in one day.

now six. of course in those 27 games he'd get to 7-8 grounders that most shortstops wouldn't touch.

That's similar to what I've heard Ernie Banks' early career as a shortstop was like (he had moved to first base by the time I started following baseball, so his earlier years at shortstop I'd only heard about). My understanding is that he had high error totals, but that was largely because he sometimes got to and misplayed balls that most shortstops wouldn't even get to, so maybe the result was a one-base error when usually it would have been a double.

I'm all for giving Cedeno another chance with the Cubs if they can rid themselves of Izturis. I wouldn't want to bring him back up as a reserve right now, though, considering how well he's doing with regular playing time at Iowa.
