The stats you posted for Barrett are worse than the ones for Derosa. Did you flip them?

Minus avg. Barrett's numbers dominate this month over DeRosa.

Given the small sample of it compared to 2 months, I'd still trust DeRosa higher up in the order compared to Barrett.

But isn't 2 months a small sample size compared to, say, 3 years?

Sure, if he wasn't a C on the wrong side of 30 who has prob. allowed his defensive struggles and everything else to impact him at the plate.

Well, I definitely think that's reason enough to not resign him, but I'm not convinced he's already been surpassed by DeRosa. If he's been outperforming him so far in June, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

murton has been straight up terrible for a corner of'er this year. he has a whole 8 rbi's and 1 hr. thats what I call not performing like a corner man. Plus his numbers at home are down right abysmal. He just looks lost right now.

eh

I like this one the best...though with Murton leading off and Soriano batting 5th. I'm also getting sick to death of Michael Barrett. I wish we had a catcher that could play defense and hit just a little bit. He costs us way too many games defensively and stumbling around the bases like a drunken sailor. At this point I'd just as soon Hll catch everyday. Z seems to like him.

A catcher who could play his position well would be nice, but playing the AAA catcher over a guy who has consistently been a very strong hitting catcher over the last three years is ridiculous. Even at defensive positions like catcher, offense is more important than defense, and Barrett's bat is finally starting to pick up again.

And just how many more games can we let Barrett cost us? His mistakes are far outweighing his bat.

Barrett isn't going to cost us any games... cause Blanco would cost us even more. Barrett's bat is still worth the tradeoff.

When Soto gets to the majors, I think he'll be a blend of both. He won't hit as good as Barrett has in the past but will hit better than Blanco and won't be as good defensively or as take charge as Blanco but will outplay Barrett defensively.

Of course, he isn't an option right now which he should be.

I don't think that is really fair. I'm pretty sure Murton would be a little more consistant with steady playing time. Which is why I think that he is better off in AAA right now. Get the stroke back and make Lou call him up to help out. He is rotting away right now.

No...I don't believe it is.

No, they are not.

To quote Fred from another thread..

Well, using one formula for Runs Created, Barrett has generated 26.1 runs for us. I don't know what the "average catcher" would have generated, but taking Blanco's numbers and extrapolating them upward to equal Barrett's playing time, you come up with 11.5 RC. Doing the same with Koyie Hill you get 2.4 RC. On the other side of the coin, I can think of 3 or 4 instances where Barrett's defense or bone headed base running contributed to a CUBS loss. Some will undoubtedly argue that there are more. I can't imagine that there are enough runs given up by Barrett to negate the extra offense he brings, in spite of his current slump.

I agree the Cubs will suffer offensively but his defensive and baserunning gaffes are just not tolerable. We can't keep putting a guy back there that can't catch, throw, or block pitches in the dirt. He always makes the wrong decisions defensively. And offensively if he does hit safely and it isn't a homer you can almost bet he'll do something stupid on the basepaths to cost us an out. Now if he was hitting like previous years and playing his normal medicore defense I'm all for letting him play all the time but this year his bat and his defense are down from previous years. And defensively I can't think of a catcher in my lifetime that has been worse than him this year. It's mind boggling how bad he has been defensively.
