Looks liks Wieters and the Orioles are about 5mil apart.

In other words, one season's worth of Jay Payton.

If the Cubs didn't exist, the Orioles would be the worst franchise in MLB.

While I agree that the Orioles are a pretty bad franchise, Wieters is asking for the moon here.

He's probably shooting for the moon because he has no interest in playing for the freaking Orioles.

All that said, the Orioles should have done their homework before drafting Wieters.

Nine first rounders who have yet to sign:

1. Tampa: LHP David Price, Vanderbilt

2. Kansas City: 3B Mike Moustakas, Chatsworth HS (Los Angeles, CA)

3. Cubs: 3B Josh Vitters, Cypress HS (Anaheim, CA)

5. Baltimore: C Matt Wieters, Georgia Tech

9. Arizona: RHP Jarrod Parker, Norwell HS (Ossian, IN)

10: San Francisco: LHP Madison Bumgarner, South Caldwell HS (Hudson, NC)

11. Seattle: RHP Phillipe Aumont, Ecole Du Versant (Gatineau, Quebec)

12. Florida: 3B Matt Dominguez, Chatsworth HS (Los Angeles, CA)

30. Yankees: RHP Andrew Brackman, North Carolina State

Rumors have Brackman getting a deal three times over slot.

I love how BA has an actually countdown timer on their web site.

Bumgarner has signed according to Rotoworld.

You're right - and for $2 million (not too far over slot). This should help get Parker and Aumont signed.

Jim Callis is doing a chat on BA/ESPN right now in regards to the signing deadline. He's rightfully ripping Selig's sllotting idiocy.

Matt (Fort Madison, IA): Will the cubs get a deal done with Josh Vitters

Jim Callis: (2:02 PM ET ) Yes. I think Vitters will sign for slot money or close to it. But he's smartly waiting to see if Price and Moustakas sign for way over slot ahead of him to see if it will pull his bonus up.

EDIT: A link might help: http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=16871

Kevin (Port Arthur, Texas): How many more first rounders do you think will be signed today?

Jim Callis: (2:45 PM ET ) I think they're all going to sign for sure with two exceptions: Moustakas and Wieters. And I still think those deals could happen late.

Jake (Baltimore, MD): What is the problem with MLB being mad at you? What can they actually do to punish you for going over slot?

Jim Callis: (2:43 PM ET ) Very little. Yell and scream. Threaten to hold back a perk like hosting an All-Star Game, but that happens once every 20-30 years for a club. Maybe give you less money from revenue sharing or the central fund. But nothing significant.

Jeff (KCMO): Did the Royals blow the 2nd pick in the draft?

Jim Callis: (2:48 PM ET ) Well, they will get pick 2A next year. But that won't be protected by compensation, so they'll have to make very sure they can sign the guy before they pick him. So what they're looking at is deferring their No. 2 pick a year and taking a lesser player--that's not good at all.

Dave (Chicago): Are there any stats showing that it makes sense to draft elite players who have fallen in the draft because of signability or do those teams that do so generally get burned?

Jim Callis: (3:00 PM ET ) Yes. I did a column on this last year that's subscriber-only but still up at http://www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/features/262107.html . I looked at first-round picks who signed for 10 percent above or below slot. In a nutshell: Teams got what they paid for. If they went cheap, most of those guys never panned out. If they paid extra for perceived extra-talented players, many of those guys paid off handsomely.

Brackman signs a ridiculous deal. 4.5M guaranteed, 3.3M signing bonus.

Damn...ladies and gentlemen that's what throwing fast, even if you're not that good, does for you.

The Rays have reportedly signed first overall pick David Price to a six-year contract worth $8.5 million.

The value of the deal should increase, depending on when Price reaches the majors. It's nice to see the Rays step up to the plate and get a deal done. Now let's just see if the Royals and Orioles do the same.

And he's having TJS.

Wow, totally forgot about that as well.

I have a feeling we're going to have to wait until the final hour when Moustakas, most likely, decides not to sign.

Hopefully Vitters will be next.

Awesome. I can't wait to see what he does in the minors.

The Yankees announced the following signings today (not just Brackman):

1st round (30th): RHP Andrew Brackman, NC State - $3.3 million

2nd round: C Austin Romine, El Toro HS (Lake Forest, CA) - $500,000

4th round: 3B Brad Suttle, Texas - $1.3 million

6th round: C Chase Weems, Columbus HS (GA) - $450,000

8th round: OF Taylor Grote, The Woodlands HS (TX) - $250,000

10th round: SS Carmen Angelini, Barbe HS (Lake Charles, LA) - $1 million

So yeah, great job Selig. Way to scare teams like KC into not going over slot while the Yankees and Tigers do whatever the hell they want.
