I am starting to get a little excited about the team again, let's hope they can reel off a few more in a row and 12 out of 15 or something like that and get right back in this clam bake.

Don't get your hopes up. I just want them to get back to .500.

Game Notes

STRIKING PERFROMANCE: Chicago, 4-1 over its last 5 games, received 8.0 innings of 1-run ball from lefty Rich Hill last night in a 2-1 win over Atlanta … he tied his career high with 11 strikeouts (also done September 6, 2006, vs. Pittsburgh) while allowing 3 hits and 1 run on an Andruw Jones solo homer to lead off the second inning.

Hill’s 11-strikeout performance was the second double-digit strikeout outing of the season for Chicago … Ted Lilly struck out 10 Reds April 15 at Wrigley Field … since September of 2006, the Cubs have had starting pitchers strike out 10 or more in 5 games – Hill has turned the trick in 4 of those contests.

Chicago’s starting pitchers have struck out 282 hitters on the season, third-most in the National League and fourth in the majors.

WELCOME TO THE SHOW!: Cubs reliever Sean Gallagher is looking to make his major league debut after he was selected from Double-A Tennessee Wednesday while the club was in Milwaukee … Gallagher looks to join 3 other rookies who have played this season for Chicago: pitcher Rocky Cherry, infielder Mike Fontenot and outfielder Felix Pie.

Gallagher, who is 21 years, 5 months and 10 days old, is the second-youngest player currently in the majors … Seattle’s Felix Hernandez is 21 years, 2 months and 1 day old … thanks to Stats Inc.’s Allan Spear.

In 2006, the Cubs used 16 rookies (9 pitchers and 7 position players) … Cubs rookie position players combined to hit .261 (140-for-526) with 15 home runs last season while the rookie hurlers went 22-35 with a 5.42 ERA (302 ER/501.2 IP) … rookies pitchers made 78 starts for the Cubs last season – no Cubs rookie has started on the mound this season.

QUALITY IS JOB ONE: Cubs starting pitchers have allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 5 of the team’s last 6 games while recording quality starts in 4 of those games … on the season, Chicago has received 31 quality outings from its rotation and the club has gone 21-10 in those games … Cubs starters have recorded a 1.70 ERA (41 ER/217.0 IP) in those 31 quality starts.

And the stream stretching up into Tennessee goes all the way up through Knoxville. If it's heading directly south, things aren't looking good.

More from the game notes...

Since May 30, Cubs hurlers have allowed just 17 walks for an average of 2.1 walks per game over the club’s last 8 contests … prior to that, Chicago’s pitching staff had issued 22 free passes over a 5-game stretch, May 25-29, for an average of 4.4 walks per game … the team is 21-14 when it allows 3 or fewer walks in a game compared to a 5-18 mark when it allows 4 or more walks per game.

Cubs starting pitchers have walked 3 or fewer in each of the team’s last 12 starts since May 26 at Los Angeles … earlier this season, Cubs pitchers went 23 straight starts without issuing more than 3 walks from April 19-May 15.

THAT’S A RELIEF: Chicago’s relievers have posted a 1.96 ERA (4 ER/18.1 IP) this month after recording a 5.52 (45 ER/73.1 IP) in May … in the team’s last 5 games, Cubs relievers have allowed just 1 earned run in 12.1 innings of work (0.73 ERA) … the Cubs bullpen combined to toss 3.2 scoreless innings Monday night in Milwaukee, their longest scoreless outing of the season since tossing 5.0 shutout innings April 13 vs. Cincinnati.

The Cubs and Braves will meet 9 times this season … this 4-game series in Atlanta marks the teams’ final series of the season … the clubs split a brief 2-game series in Atlanta, April 18-19, and the Braves took 2-of-3 at Wrigley Field, June 1-3 … Chicago is looking to win its first season series against Atlanta since 2000, when the Cubs went 5-4.

A final installment from the game notes...

About Marshall

Sean, 24, was recalled from Triple-A Iowa May 22 and made his first start of the season the following day in San Diego in a 2-1 Cubs loss … he made his Major League debut with Chicago April 9, 2006 vs. St. Louis. ©

He was the first Cubs starting pitcher to make his Major League debut without appearing in Triple-A since Sergio Mitre on July 22, 2003.

Marshall was added to the Cubs’ 40-man roster in November 2005.

Graduated from Manchester High School in Midlothian, Va., in 2000.

Was selected in the sixth round of the 2003 June draft out of Virginia Commonwealth University.

His twin brother, Brian, was selected by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2003 draft … Brian, a relief pitcher, split 2005 between Lowell (A) and Greenville (A).

In his 27 Major League starts, Marshall:

Issued 2 or fewer walks 14 times.

Has pitched at least 6.0 innings 12 times … has thrown at least 7.0 innings 5 times.

Got all the guys in there you want. Still would kinda like to see Theriot at the 2 hole against leftys, but I guess there is something to be said about consistency in the lineup.

God i pray for no PPD. or lengthy delays. Anyone in or around ATL got an up close look of the situation? Not sure exactly where the stadium is in ATL when looking at a radar map.

Does Cormier throw lefty now?

The stadium is one mile south of I-20 on I-75.

Nope, he's a righty.

I like the lineup.

Why do we keep playing this Pie kid??? He's taking too much playing time away from Jacque. I can't turn my back on Jacque dude!

In all seriousness, it's refreshing to see the Cubs playing a few of their homegrown rookies every single day. I enjoy watching the games so much more with Pie and Theriot in the lineup.

Uh, WGN claims Jones is starting and will be batting 4th.

So does Gameday. My guess is Floyd was a late scratch. He probably hurt something again.

Edit: And Bruce beat me to it.
