He took a baseball right to the jewels and rolled around like a baby, if he had any grit he'd have jumped up and took 3rd.

They never mentioned the groin shot on the radio. I thought he broke a rib or something they way they talked about it.

it was a direct hit, quite impressive actually

I thought it was more like he actually landed right on the ball with his, uh, area as opposed to actually getting nailed by the throw.

either way it was quite disturbing listening to Bob explain second by second on the slow motion replay exactly when the pain of the baseball to the groin hits you.

I saw Pie with the bases loaded and his knees buckled on a curve ball. Told me all I needed to know.

except that wasn't a curveball.

curveball, fastball, foshball, gyroball, eephus, it doesn't matter. I can tell everything I need to know about a player from watching a handful of at-bats.

What the hell is a vorp

Since his recall: .317/.404/.463/.867

That was halfway through tonight's game.

Up to the millisecond line: .326/.408/.465/.873

Hey, hey, don't inflate his numbers!

Official MLB stats have him at .326/.400/.465/.865.

Cheater.

And, yeah, what do those numbers mean anywho. He's not clutch and can't hit a HR to save his life, so...

I know this is a completely kooky stat especially since he hasn't been playing much lately, but with Pie on the team the Cubs are now 33-18. Without him, they've gone 10-23.

With him, 15 games over .500

Without him, 13 under.

Usually, I don't believe in coincidences, but its either that or their really is something to the stories about his infectious joy of playing the game and winning. After all, Pie did win a lot of championships in the minors. Is there such a thing as a human good luck charm?

This has to be coincidence, and a strange coincidence, at that...

It isn't really that strange. There are lots of streaks in baseball, many of hich are entirely meaningless. See Neifi's streaks with the Cubs vs. his overall numbers. Fred had a great list on this earlier.

By all means keep Pie around if we want to, but as for the likely cause of our winning streak? I'd sooner put my money on finding the right formula in the BP, the emergence of Soriano's hot bat in June, and much improved defense and baserunning than some sort of magical Pie action from the bench.

But that's because Soriano is excited that his buddy Pie is in the majors, so yes, Pie being up really is the cause of the winning.
