1. How much of his contract is guaranteed money?

2. If he gives up baseball and goes back to football, what degree of financial relief do the Cubs get?

1. All of it as long as he is playing baseball.

2. The contract, I assume, would end if he goes back to football. Samardzija would also have to return his signing bonus.

Jeff needs to do something different or this could be the worst 7+ million dollars spent in history of minor league baseball.

Well, the Cubs waste money at the Major League level all the time. Might as well waste it in the minors too.

He didn't pitch much in college and when he did, he wasn't that great. Regardless of his contract and what he did in spring training, he was always going to be a project.

I wouldn't rag on Wilken's pick just yet.

Alex *cough* Rios *cough*

If Samardzija hasn't improved drastically by the end of next season, then I'll worry.

so because rios worked out, samardzija will too? ok.

No, it means just b/c someone doesn't succeed immediately, don't write them off.

You are a Hill fan, are you not? You should know something about not judging a prospect prematurely.

Rios was widely panned when Wilken selected him. Geez, scouts scoffed at him for the first 3 years of his pro career. How's that turned out?

Maybe - just maybe - Wilken has a freaking clue what he's doing.

Rios was a high school hitter.

Even when Rich Hill sucked there was still the stuff that gave him the potential to be good, like an insane strikeout ratio.

Samardzija isn't going to be a star unless he strikes out some guys. He didn't do it in college, and it's gotten worse in his early professional career.

The "Wilken is smarter than you, lol" argument is weak. Why not say why Wilken would think he's going to pan out?

Jeff has a 2.32 GO/AO ratio. His ERA and H/9 is going to be largely impacted by the defense he gets, especially in a small sample size. Is he missing bats? Nope. He's supposedly been told to use his change a lot (not his best pitch by a long shot). He's pitching to develop skills, not get people out.

From all accounts, Samardzija's slider hasn't progressed as rapidly as we'd like to see. When you're throwing fastballs and changeups (again, not his best pitch), you're going to get rocked.

How does Hill do when he can spot the fastball? He gets hammered. One pitch isn't enough. It was the same from college up through the pro levels for Hill. Don't judge a pitcher before his time.

i'm not writing samardzija off (though i'm certainly not pumped about him)...i just think it's stupid to point to one draft pick wilken made a handful of years ago as proof that he knows what he's doing.

oh, and since you brought hill into it...compare hill's k rate to samardzija's if you want a good laugh.

he should still be striking out high a hitters by sheer accident.
