As reported in Transactions, Blanco is now on the 15-day DL, with Hill coming up from Iowa. So at least for now Barrett seems safe.

Certainly Blanco's offense is terrible, but he's still a well-respected defensive catcher and really puts Barrett to shame in that department.

The real problem isn't that we might have to play a defense-only catcher. Many teams do, and they win with it. It's just that the rest of our offense down in the order is so terrible it creates a black hole 7,8,9.

I'm getting sick of watching Barrett throw games down the toilet so either he needs to get his head out of his ass or we need another catcher.

If you think you're sick of Barrett making a boneheaded mistake every few games, wait until you get that sinking feeling in your chest when Blanco is coming up to bat in crucial situations... which is likely to happen much more often than Barrett getting picked off.

Every few games? It's been more than once per game lately. And his bat hasn't been all that great anyway. I already cringe when Barrett comes to bat, not going to be much difference with Blanco sucking too.

At least Blanco won't throw the ball behind a damn runner, which any little league catcher knows not to do.

I can't beleive that anyone is pining for more Henry Blanco. It boggles the mind.

At least Barrett could turn it around as he has hit well in the past. With Blanco, we know what we're getting and it is not good.

Blanco's OPS+ is sitting at a sizzling 27 right now. Twenty-Seven.

Comparing Barretts defense to a little league catcher is pretty darn insulting...to the little league catchers of the world! :D

since everyone is talking about how bad barrett's offense has been, has blanco's defense been all that great? he's only thrown out 1 runner stealing.

thats true.

But he is all 2nd among active catchers in throwing out baserunners, behind only Pudge at just under 42%.

So if they are stealing, it may not be just Barretts bad arm and some of the changes to the pitching staff may have been warranted. It will be interesting to see nonetheless.

I don't understand the love for Barrett. If Hendry had been smart enough to make one or two more offensive moves, Barrett would be expendable. You don't need an offensive catcher if you are getting offense elsewhere -- ask the Astros and Cardinals. Have some of you forgotten how streaky Barrett is offensively? Even if he were hitting this year, I think we'd have maybe one or two more wins. Then again maybe we'd have the same record.

Barrett is not a smart baseball player. Remember Felipe Alou said he would never be an everyday big league catcher. Yeah, well, he is one, but if somebody had asked me after that quote was made what team would Barrett likely be on I would have said the Cubs.

The nonsense of Zambrano aside, today was exhibit A of Barrett' Baseball stupidity and defensive ineptitude, picked off again, passed ball, throwing error.

So take it for what it's worth, but my dad heard from one of his golfing buddies (whose brother works for one of the sports radio stations) that Lou offered to resign during the meeting but Hendry said no. Lou supposedly said that they're not responding to him, and offered his resignation. I've never met the radio guy, but I've met my dads friend and I trust him.

Wow, I feel really dirty for posting an internet rumor.

Its a shame Hendry didn't make the same offer.

I think if Lou wanted to walk out on this team then he would have and none of them could have stopped him. He has done it before and he will do it again.

I could probably fill books with dumb things Felipe Alou has said and done.

IMHO, I believe Lou is upset with what Hendry has given him to work with. It's hard for me to believe that part of the meeting wasn't Lou going nuts about needing ML talent players.

Hendry has to make some moves. I'm not a big fan of the whole "firesale" talk going on here. It reminds me of a Sunday night in NYC listening to WFAN after a NY "Football" Giants loss................ if you've never heard it, it's painful to say the least.

This team as currently constructed won't win, but I don't think it's such a dire situation that we need to trade all the good players!!!
