Tennessee is scoreless after 3.

Sean Marshall is starting for Iowa, not Carlos Marmol.

Marmol's been moved to the pen.

Actually Marmol's 46K/12BB is a lot better the I'd thought it be. Hmmm..

good to see eric walking more... 5 BB in his last 7 games. 10 game hit streak now too.

I'm sure you now walking and hitting go hand in hand unless you're a small class of player like Vlad or Ichiro. When Eric was in Memphis he was swinging at everything in sight. Hopefully he is making the connection.

Patterson's always been a pretty patient hitter. His career IsoD is right near .070, and it was only slightly under that at WT last year.

uh, anyone know why Marmol left after recording 2 outs in the 9th? I saw that he hit someone - hoping he got tossed rather than injured. It was a 9-1 game, so I can't imagine they would've pulled him at that point. And for the record, I support him being moved to the pen.

There was no injury timeout, so injury doesn't seem likely.

i don't wanna start a new thread for this but i went to the Sounds game tonite and Yovani Gallardo was stellar again...striking out 11 over 6 IP....here is his line --

IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA

Gallardo, Y(W, 5-1) 6.0 1 0 0 2 11 0 2.22

isn't it about time milwaukee calls him up and gives him a shot in the rotation? i think so, though i'll be sad to see him go...he's great to watch.

Nice showing by Marshall. It's good to see him doing well after his shoulder problems.

Problem is, there's nowhere to use him. Suppan, Sheets and Capuano obviously aren't leaving the rotation. Vargas has pitched really well. Bush is the only one who has struggled some, but he still has a really solid 38/8 K/BB rate, and he pitched pretty well last year too. Chances are Vargas or Sheets will go down at some point this year... I'm sure Gallardo can step in at that point, but until then I don't see him going anywhere.

Also, about Korean RHP Simon Lee:

At least he doesn’t still take off his hat and run with it in his free-hand when he covers first-base.

This is cracking me up, I'd love to see that.

Maybe he was yanked because he just got called up to the Cubs to replace Eyre.

IowaCubs.com"]Marshall quiets RedHawks

Sean Marshall pitched eight strong innings Ronny Cedeno had three hits and two runs scored to lead Iowa over host Oklahoma, 9-2, on Thursday night.

Marshall (2-0) limited the RedHawks to one run on two hits and three walks. The 24-year-old southpaw struck out three and lowered his ERA to 1.82.

Cedeno doubled with one out in the sixth and, three batters later, Mike Kinkade hit an RBI single to snap a scoreless tie. Eric Patterson's two-run double highlighted a four-run seventh and Koyie Hill doubled in Kinkade and Micah Hoffpauir to cap a four-run ninth.

Marlon Byrd and Nate Gold each drove in a run for Oklahoma (19-20). Frank Catalanotto went 1-for-3 as he continued a rehab assignment. The outfielder went on the 15-day disabled list on May 1 with a right bicep strain.

Reliever Scott Shoemaker (0-1) allowed five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits and a walk in 2 1/3 innings for the loss. Starter Josh Rupe lasted just two innings, giving up three hits and striking out two. --Danny Wild/MLB.com

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Braves Walk Off With 3-2 Win Thursday Night over Smokies

Pearl, MS-The Braves snapped a scoreless tie with a fifth inning J.C Holt RBI single scoring Mike Rosema.

The Smokies rallied back with two runs in the top of the sixth. Jemel Spearman got things going with an infield single and then moved to third when Jake Fox doubled to center. Josh Kroeger drove them in with a hot roller to right give Tennessee a short lived 2-1 lead.

The Braves came right back to tie the score. Carl Loadenthal singled followed by a Clint Sammons sacrifice bunt. Mike Rozema then rolled a single up reliever Paul Schapperts glove and arm into the air and safely on the ground. Pitch hitter Josh Burrus then sent a sacrifice fly to center which tied the score 2-2. Great relief pitching from both squads kept the score tied until the bottom of the ninth.

Jerry Blevins (0-1) fresh from Daytona entered the game and proceeded to walk the lead off batter J.C Holt. He was then moved into scoring position with a sacrifices bunt and scored on a Brandon Jones single his third hit in the game.

Joey Devine (2-2) was the winning pitcher retiring the side in order in the top of the ninth.

Daytona on a Four Game Losing Streak

By: Jeanine Jiannetti (Jesse Estrada Photo/Tommy Proctor)

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Leading three to none into the seventh inning, the Daytona Cubs (20-19) add a fourth game to their losing streak, as the Jupiter Hammerheads (17-23) scored six runs in the final three innings to defeat the Cubs, 6-3 on Thursday night.

It seemed like a promising night when Jesus Valdez (1-4) led off the second inning with a double and scored on a wild pitch from Jupiter right-hander Ryan Tucker.

The scoring resumed in the third inning when Tyler Colvin (1-4) smacked a two run blast over the wall in right-center field, scoring Chris Amador (0-3) who reached on a walk. The homer was Colvin’s third of the season.

The six-foot-eight-inch, right-hander Jesse Estrada and the Cubs defense held the Hammerheads scoreless through six innings. Estrada (0-0) did not receive a decision after a stellar performance, not allowing a run on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Reliever, Grant Johnson came on in the top of the seventh inning, with a full count to lead off batter Trent D’Antonio (0-2), there was a brief delay that lasted twenty minutes as the lights cut off at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

When play resumed, Johnson walked D’Antonio who then scored on a Augusto Septimo (1-3), homerun. The next batter, Lorenzo Scott (0-3) also reached on a walk, and crossed home on an RBI single from Gaby Sanchez (2-5) as he leveled catcher Jake Muyco at the plate. Sanchez was then caught stealing second base by Muyco on the next pitch

In the top of the ninth, D’Antonio and Septimo led off the inning with consecutive walks. They both were able to score on a throwing error by Cubs pitcher, Mike Phelps. The Hammerheads scored one more insurance run to beat the Cubs and take game one of a three game set.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Drop Second Straight to Snappers

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs dropped a second straight one-run game to the Beloit Snappers 2-1 at O’Brien Field on Thursday afternoon. The loss drops the Chiefs to 20-18 on the season and 7-9 at home this season.

The Chiefs had an early scoring opportunity in the first inning after a lead off walk to Matt Camp followed by an infield single by Jim Adduci. Josh Lansford moved both runners over with a sacrifice bunt but Yusuf Carter popped out to second and Alfred Joseph grounded out to second to end the inning.

Danny Valencia led off the fourth inning with a double and quickly came around to score after the next batter Johnny Woodard singled to center to make the score 1-0

Catcher Matt Canepa reached on an error by the third basemen Garrett Olson in the fifth inning and was moved over by a sacrifice bunt by Jonathon Mota. Lansford tied the game with a single that bounced off the bag at third allowing Canepa to score from third base to tie the game 1-1.

The Snappers added a run in the seventh inning after three straight singles by Joe Benson, Chris Parmelee and an RBI single by Garrett Olson off Chiefs reliever Marco Carrillo to extend the lead to 2-1.

Lansford came through for the Chiefs in the eighth inning with a double down the right field line to get the tying run into scoring position. Yusuf Carter singled off the glove of the reliever Armando Gabino to give the Chiefs runners at the corners with just one out but Alfred Joseph grounded into an inning ending double play.

Chiefs starter Jose Pina had his best outing of the season allowing just one run on four hits over a season high six innings. Carrillo took the loss allowing one run on three hits over the game’s final three innings. Dan Leatherman worked two shut out innings out of the bullpen to pick his fourth win of the season. Closer Rob Delaney picked up the save for the second straight game and now leads the league with 12 saves.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Josh Lansford (3B)- Josh drove in the Chiefs only run of the game with a single off the bag at third base in the fifth inning. He finished the game 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Notes…The DARE Day crowd of 8,622 was the largest of the season at O’Brien Field and the fifth largest crowd in the stadium’s history…The Chiefs stranded 14 runners on base…Matt Camp’s hitting streak was snapped at 10 games… The Chiefs have scored just one run in the last 18 innings of play…

I woulda thought the Marmol conversion to bullpen would have come after some failures, he's been doing awesome so far....

Anyway, great to see that start by Marshall. 12-8 GO-FO isn't terrible either.

Pie, Patterson, and Marshall are sure looking like big leaguers.

Will Fox make Barrett expendable?

Fox played LF last night. I spoke with him briefly before the game and they are trying to move him all around in an effort to give him some versatility. My guess is the Cubs like Fox's bat but don't see him a long-term solution at catcher. He looked ok in left last night (made a nice diving catch to take away a hit) and had a good night at the plate.

No because they don't play the same position anymore.

Des Moines Register"]"This was his best outing (with Iowa)," manager Buddy Bailey said of Marshall, who is now 2-0 with a 1.82 ERA in four starts. "He was ahead in the counts most of the night, and in the later innings he got his curveball going.

"He had 93 pitches through eight innings, which tells how good he was in commanding the whole situation."
