So basically I should expect the Braves to clobber Berg....

He's had 3 good starts and 4 bad starts. Hopefully he's due for a good one today.

Baseball America[/url]"]...

“He’s played some first base and we’re starting working some ground balls to him at third base as well now,” Double-A Tennessee manager Pat Listach said. “He’s definitely increased his versatility by working his tail off.

“He’s a good left fielder right now and with his background as a catcher . . . it just makes him an extremely valuable commodity. He still needs work on his reactions (on both corner infield spots), but he’s been a joy to watch. He works very hard every day and that’s really all you can ask for from a guy who’s learning so much on the fly.”

What makes Fox even more of a joy to watch lately is that for all his extra defensive effort, there certainly hasn’t been a drop-off at the plate. Over his last two games, Fox put together seven straight hits—a short stretch that also included three home runs. He’s 11-for-16 (.687) with four homers in his last four games and hitting .353/.370/.612 in 139 at-bats overall.

His Achilles’ Heel has been drawing walks—Fox has just two free passes compared to 28 strikeouts this season. But as long as he’s making contact like he’s been, the Cubs will likely live with it.

“He’s hitting every pitch right now,” Listach said. “There’s no question he’s on a tear—he’s as hot as I’ve seen. He’s one of those guys that’s making my job a heck of a lot easier.

“He’s compact with a line-drive approach and he uses the whole field, he doesn’t walk a lot, but that’s because he’s been so aggressive and his pitch recognition has been very good. When he gets his pitch, he hasn’t been missing it often.”

From AZ Phil:

Robert Hernandez is doing great. The last couple of times he pitched he threw in road games where I was not in attendance, but I heard he had very good outings both times. I expect he might pitch tomorrow in the intrasquad game at Fitch.

Hernandez has been THE best pitcher (stuff/poise combo) at EXST. Even though he is only 18, I expect Hernandez will probably go to Boise.

RHP Alberto “El Toro” Cabrera is another outstanding young pitcher (he’s also at EXST, and he should be the ace of the AZL Mesa staff this summer. He throws gas and has an outstanding breaking ball. But Hernandez is more polished.

BTW, if you have never seen Robert Hernandez, he looks like he’s about 14 years old. He’s very quiet and serious. I have never seen him smile or joke around with the other players. He also somewhat resembles ex-Cubs OF Dave Martinez. They could be brothers.

Cabrera, on the other hand, loves to laugh and tell jokes. He is very energetic and assertive. On days when he’s not pitching, he wears a t-shirt with his nickname (”El Toro? on the front of it. Apparently somebody had it made special for him, and he’s really proud of it.

El Toro is Z's nickname!

Cabrera sounds like what I'd expect Z to be like when he was 18.

Chiefs outfielder Andy Lopez was placed on the disabled list and sent to extended spring training for rehab. Lopez has not played since April 30 because of an injured quadriceps. Ryne Malone will replace Lopez on the roster from extended spring training but may not be available to play until Friday because of the 11 a.m. start today. . .

 !

Let's hope he doesn't end up going to Boise or back to EXST, in that case. :D

Today from AZ Phil (the previous one was for yesterday):

24-year old RHP Brandon Taylor (the ex-3B from BYU who was converted to pitcher last season) finally got some game action after spending most of EXST on the rehab/limited action list, and he threw the ball very well in his two inning stint. He needs to get moving because he turns 25 in July.

6?7 19-year old RHP Chris Huseby (the Cubs 2006 11th round pick who signed for “1st round money? followed Taylor and looked good, getting a lot of ground balls with his 93 MPH two-seamer (7/0 GB/FB). He finished strong, blowing away the last two hitters with a nice mix of heat, benders, and change-ups.

17-year old Venezuelan Larry Suarez–who got a bonus equivalent to “3rd round money” when he signed with the Cubs last Summer, did not throw as well as Taylor or Huseby. Every single time I have seen Suarez pitch, he struggles with his command, and today was no exception. He gave up two runs in his two innings of work, but was saved from further damage thanks to two outstanding running catches in the outfield by Cliff Andersen and Sammy Baez. Suarez is a really big dude, with the same body type as Carlos Zambrano.

Also, about Korean RHP Simon Lee:

At least he doesn’t still take off his hat and run with it in his free-hand when he covers first-base.

And Cliff Andersen hit a 450-foot HR and then struck out the next two times up. The box score is in the link.

Marmol's been moved to the pen.

Ahh, thanks. I just read that. John Webb has moved to the starting rotation instead. Meh.

Im guessing this is because the Cubs are in dire need of some bulpen arms that can get people out on a consistent basis.

Iowa is scoreless after 5. Marshall: 5 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K/0 BB.

Tennessee is scoreless after 3.

Daytona tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning after Jupiter scored 3 off Grant Johnson in the 7th. Great outing from Jesse Estrada though for the D-Cubs: 6 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 5 K/3 BB.
