Oh how I love Rotoworld's sense of humor.

Reds optioned third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to Triple-A Louisville.

And the Reds wonder why they're consistently a second-division team. Encarnacion is one of the team's best players, and the club is going to need him to bounce back if it has any chance of contending. Instead, it looks like he might be on the Austin Kearns path out of town. There should be several teams looking to find out just how much bullpen help it would take to acquire the 24-year-old.

I have a hunch that the Reds may be one of the 10 teams Eyre refuses a trade to under his limited NTC. Otherwise, considering the love the Reds have for mediocre relievers, they'd likely do it.

Where exactly would the Cubs play Encarnacion? The only positions he's played in the majors are third base with a pair of appearances at first, and he hasn't played at shortstop, a position the Cubs could actually use him at, since A ball in 2002.

True, but anytime you can add real talent to the org, you take it.

was this just an excuse to play hamilton/griffey/dunn in the outfield every day, and have freel move to third?

I don't disagree with that, but I would question giving up a player/players to acquire a talented player that's blocked at both of his possible positions for the forseeable future.

The only immediate value I could see him having to the Cubs (if he weren't packaged and used as a trading chip) would be as an Olmedo Saenz/Russell Branyan-type player on the bench, a corner infielder with some pop.

If only the Cubs followed that thought process. I've always been frustrated by Cubs management, but I've really come to loathe the organizational philosophy.

I think so. Edwin was the odd man out when they were trying to get Hamilton in the lineup early in the year.

But why would they need an excuse to do that?

All four are better players than Encarnacion.

Encarnacion hit .276/.359/.473/.832 last year as a 23 year old. He's a much better option than Freel, who will put up a .360-.370 OBP and about a .375 SLG.

Since when is Freel better than Encarnacion? Encarnacion was better last year than Freel has ever been.

That's without even comparing their relative upsides and ages. Foolish move.

And yet, it is completely expected from Narron and Krivsky.

What do you want to bet the paint in Krivsky's office is lead-based?

RF. He couldn't be any worse than Murton out there.

Just flip Encarnacion if you have Aramis blocking him. Other teams will value him unlike the Reds.

Oh, and my fantasy team says screw you, Cincinnati.

When we are looking to deal Zambrano for Arod midseason, Encarnacion could come in handy as the Yankees will need a replacement 3rd baseman

I'm just sayin...........................

Cause, see. Matt Murton dropped that fly ball.

and then threw a ball to nobody in particular today. He certainly doesn't look like a good fielder in RF.

Well Jones's range likely does make him a better RF despite Murton's big advantage in his arm.

I don't see the huge deal here, let him go back to AAA and get some confidence, then he will be brought back up.

He was hitting .218/.301/.287.

His defense has been atrocious as well. He's a talented player, but I don't think sending him down for a while is all that bad of a move.
