I will be going to the I-Cubs game tonight. Looking at the list of starting pitchers, I am getting the short end of the stick for tonight!

I will try to post when I get back about what I saw/liked/etc.

I am going with my wife's work (she is the director of a daycare and some of the families and kids are going) so I will try as hard as possible to not get distracted by the two year old who eats a whole bag of cotton candy and drinks the 32 oz soda, and then watch as his parents try to get him to sit down and watch a baseball game.

Neither are Veal's. 25 Ks and 21 BBs in 28 innings means his pitch count is through the roof early. Glad he's been much better recently, but that's always a bad formula.

Yeah, at least Veal has shown improvement the last few outings. It had been brutal before that (double the BBs compared to the Ks).

AZ Phil from Cub Reporter:

It used to be what happened at Fitch Park stayed at Fitch Park, but what heck, let’s just blow the freakin’ lid off the place!

Gian Guzman went 3-4 with a double and two RBI, Elvis Lara slammed two doubles and collected two RBI, and Sammy Baez had three hits and a stolen base, as Cubs EXST (Boise/Mesa) Team “B” edged Cubs EXST (Boise/Mesa) Team “A” 3-2 in an intrasquad game at Fitch Park Field #3 this morning in front of one fan (and I’ll let you guess who that one fan was).

Two of the Cubs best pitching prospects got work in the game, and both Alberto “El Toro” Cabrera and Francisco Acosta looked very good, as the two 18-year old Dominicans each threw three innings of shutout ball.

On the somewhat negative side, Daytona RHP Michael Cooper–at EXST rehabbling from a sore shoulder–labored through his two frames, and could not finish his second inning of work.He does NOT look like he’s ready to rejoin Daytona.

And hard-throwing RHP Julio “The Animal” Castillo-recently demoted to EXST from Peoria after issuing 15 BB and striking out only two in eight innings of work in the Midwest League–continued to struggle with his command and was unable to finish his second inning, giving up two doubles and a triple (and a walk) along the way.

Brad Clipp, Andrew McCormick, Audy Santana, and Harol Tolentino had unimpressive outings, as McCormick and Clipp had to be yanked before completing their scheduled innings, Tolentino struggled to throw strikes and was lucky to give up only one run, and Santana labored to the point where the Cubs bench told the umpire to make Santana work faster, at which point Santana seemed to sulk.

On defense, Gian Guzman made an outstanding over-the-shoulder catch running into LF foul territory with his back to the infield, and Steve Clevenger cut-down Valerio Heredia (probably the fastest man in the Cubs organization) trying to steal. The 17-year old Guzman (who looks like he could be Aramis Ramirez’s little brother) was signed by the Cubs just six months ago and is making his pro debut (apparently skipping DSL) in 2007, and Clevenger (2006 7th round draft pick) is a former infielder who is being converted into a catcher (and so far, so good for Clev)

More good revioews on Alberto Cabrera and Francisco Acosta. :D I can't wait to see the box scores once the Mesa co-aces get in some real games in the AZL. I also think it's awesome that Cabrera already has a nickname. Gian Guzman sounds interesting, especially since he's going to be in Mesa at age 17.

Unofficial box score is in the link (check out the comments section): http://mvn.com/milb-cubs/2007/05/10/felix-pie-back-to-iowa-pagan-recalled/

Daytona up 4-0 in the bottom of the second. Jeff Samardzija: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 K.

Peoria scoreless in the third. Jose Ceda: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 2 K.

Samardzija struggled big time in the third inning, giving up 3 runs (three walks, an error [potential GIDP], two IF singles [one was a potential GIDP, the other was a potential inning-ending FC] and a sac fly so far). Daytona leads it 4-3 now in the bottom of the third. Samardzija's line: 3 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 K, 3 BB. <-- not sure how many of the runs are earned.

Peoria up 1-0 in the third.

Only 1 of the runs was earned. It doesn't sound like he's getting rocked, but his control has definitely been shaky. Daytona's defense always seems to take the day off when he's pitching too.

And Samardzija is done after 3 innings :?

He met his pitch count - he had about 5 full counts in the third inning.

Micah Hoffpauir with a 2-run HR, his 6th of the year as Iowa scored four in the first. 4-0 Iowa in the second.

Veal: 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 K. Tennessee scoreless after 1.

Samardzija: 3 IP, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 3 BB. Daytona up 7-3 in the fifth inning (MiLB.com is wrong as it says 6-3).

Ceda: 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K, 2 BB and his night is done . Peoria is up 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth.

Yeah, but the HR was given up to Longoria. Not necessarily the worst hitter to give a homer up to.

Fontenot's BA is now at .349. We all know that he can't field, but he'd be a great bat off our bench right now.

He'd be decent at 2B, but nothing the Cubs don't already have with DeRosa and Theriot.

yeah im convinced samardzija wont ever be anything as a starter. call it premature if you want. i call it visionary.

I'd like to think the slider and change will come around. He's only been throwing them for 2 years.

Don't know about that.

But I think we can put aside any notion that he'll be fast-tracked to the majors. If he develops enough to get a sept call-up in 2008 I'd be shocked.
