I think this is a language barrier issue coming from Papi. It sounds like he's trying to say he used to take OTC supplements that may or may not be on the banned list now. Most supplements sold south of the border don't have good ingredient lists.

Doesn't seem to me he's trying to say steroids so much.

He said he might have taken them in the Dominican because who knows what was put in his protein shakes. It sounded like he took them when he was young and in the minors. Did he body get big between his Twins and Red Sox offseason? I don't think he was covering himself as much as he was saying that he doesn't know everything that he takes in and he thinks Barry might not have either. The problem is that Barry certainly did. But HGH was not illegal. So if Barry took them and that is proven what could possibly happen to him besides him getting an even worse name?

i just assume that everyone in baseball is on roids

or was

What if you took a half season off for a few years in a row to juice up, then waited for the stuff to leave before entering the league? You know, just to give you an edge when you pitch for the Yankees for tons of cash.

Ortiz spent six non-descript seasons in Minnesota before signing with the Red Sox before the 2003 season.

WTF? Ortiz had some injury problems in Minny, but he was pretty darn good when he played. IIRC, the Twinkie fans were pretty upset when he left.

Non-descript?

not Boston or New York = nondescript

When Big Papi played with Boston and played over 80 games a year he averaged 17 homers and 75 rbi. Since he went to Boston, well yes I would certainly call his Minnesota years nondescript because he averaged 40 homers and 125 rbi's. His OPS went up 200 points when he went to Boston. He was an average to below average infielder/DH in Minnesota.

I think this honesty is refreshing, actually.

He just says he doesn't know for sure if he did due to taking "protein shakes" back in the day. I say who cares. He's always been a big guy, IIRC.

Sounds like hes covering his ass to me.

Agreed. I hate to be so pessimistic but it really does sound like he's setting everyone up for some sort of revelation. As though he knows his name is about to be linked to the Mets trainer or Balco or Bonds or something. So when it is revealed he can say "Yeah, like I told you the other day, I was drinking shakes in the Dominican Republic and who knows what was in them?"

I'm sure that some poor shop owner is going to go to the extra expense of putting costly steroids into shakes and not tell anyone.
