"Square peg, round holes

Beyond the Mark Prior soap opera, beyond the Kerry Wood drama, it's becoming clear the Cubs have a poorly constructed roster. They don't have a reliable shortstop. Cesar Izturis has not hit, Ryan Theriot can rake, but would be challenged to play defense in the middle every day. And no one seems ready to give Ronny Cedeño another chance.

And the outfield is a bit of a mess because of Alfonso Soriano's failed center-field experiment. Soriano also was switched to leadoff to get him jump-started. It's a short-term fix that makes no sense in the long term. You don't pay a guy $136 million unless he's hitting in the middle of order.

With Soriano in left field, that means the Cubs will continue to try and trade Jacque Jones to clear a spot for Cliff Floyd. This is a talented team that could win a diluted Central Division. But the parts don't seem to fit. "

it amazes me that these bozos get jobs as writers when they can't even get their facts right. First he starts off with Prior and Wood (no one was expecting them to be ready this year, at least I was not) and starting pitching has been the least of our worries Hill, Lilly, Marquie and Z are pitching great so far. Then he goes on about The Soriano experiment failing in CF when he was moved to LF due to 1) his injued hammy and 2) so Pie could play CF and soriano would not be moved back and forth It is not like Soriano could not handle CF, and it ended up working out better because Jones has played CF well and this also showcases Jones for teams looking for an outfielder. Then he says they are trying to make room for Floyd when it is really Murton who would prob get most of the starts once Jones is moved.

Sorry for the rant I just hate sports writers who talk crap about the cubs when they are better than the team the writer is covering.

I actually believe this article makes complete sense. The Cubs clearly have a team that needs players to play out of position for them to get on the field. The team was not constructed well --and if they do win, you have to give a lot of credit to Piniella for making it all work.

Hendry had money to spend, so he spent it. He thought he could move some players to make it all fit better, but so far that has not happened, i.e. Jones.

Calling Soriano a short-term experiment at leadoff in order to jumpstart his bat shows a staggering lack of baseball knowledge.

yeah, that line is pretty baffling.

That's the only thing wrong with the article, and the one thing the original poster didn't complain about.

The Cubs are a square peg round hole team. There's nothing ideal about anything they do.

agreed. i don't think it's the smartest of articles, but there's nothing else wrong with it.

You're right, the general point of the article is accurate, but you could nitpick some other details. He more or less says Theriot can't defensively handle a full-time job in the MI, and I've seen no evidence that's the case.

He also says Theriot can "rake," and while he definitely has been raking, isn't there still some question as to how well he'll do over a full season? Last i heard, his BABIP was pretty high, though I haven't seen the numbers recently. (And yes, I realize that last point actually supports his argument that SS is an unsettled position.)

It's weird; his overall point is accurate, but much of the supporting details aren't. Whatever.

The Rockies very quickly nestled into the spot they will likely fill all season. Last place.

Might as well pick on other teams when there isn't much more that can be said about your own team, I suppose.

the article was pretty stupid, but the cubs are a poorly constructed team. the OF has too many guys and they're nearly all playing out of position. floyd makes ward redundant and izturis makes cedeno redundant (and vice versa). three loogies in the pen really doesn't make much sense.

Beyond the Mark Prior soap opera, beyond the Kerry Wood drama,

Prior has been gone the whole year, how is that a "Soap Opera?" don't soap operas have twists and surprises? What could be easier to predict than Wood and Prior being hurt?

haha, this really would be an awful soap opera. the "twist" was that prior sort of tried to pitch in spring training, but everybody saw that he still sucked and eventually he died like every other year.

Now if he comes back from the dead- that would be a soap opera.
