NOTE: Sammy Baez played CF for both squads, but did not bat. With Baez’s startling growth spurt during the off-season, it looks like he may have “outgrown” SS. It’s possible that the Cubs just might be thinking about moving Sammy to the outfield.

...

Suarez was just slightly better, but he was unable to complete his second inning of work.

It appears that Suarez needs a LOT of work on his mechanics and command, and he might be one of the guys the Cubs send to the new Cubs/Twins co-op team in the Venezuelan Summer League (VSL).

Simultaneous with the intrasquad game on Field #3, LHP Chris Shaver (rehabbing from post ‘06 shoulder surgery) threw a 30-pitch “live” BP session to Ryne Malone (rehabbing from knee surgery), Valerio Heredia (just returned to EXST from Peoria), and Jesus Reyes on Field #2. Shaver looked rusty, but he threw a few breaking balls with no signs of distress. Hopefully he’ll get into an EXST game soon, and get his rehab process onto the fast track. (Shaver was a rotation starter at AA last year). Whether he will remain a starting pitcher or be moved to the bullpen (as happened with Billy Petrick) is still to be determined

This is the first I've heard about the co-op team in the VSL. Shaver sounds like he's a month away from Tennessee.

why is rundle in Extended spring training?

Many young guys (HS picks) end up there to start their first full pro season.

Agreed. If he does well he should play for Boise later in the year.

Actually, I'll be rather disappointed if he and Cliff Andersen don't end up in Boise this season.

From what I've heard about Rundle, I think he needs to stick in Mesa for awhile but Andersen seems like a kid who should be ready for Boise and maybe even Peoria.

John Nelson also homered and Edgar Gonzalez, Nick Stavinoha and Brendan Ryan had three hits apiece for Memphis, which has won six of seven.

Cubs starter Ryan O'Malley (0-2) was tagged for 10 runs on 11 hits and two walks in 2 1/3 frames.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]SMOKIES COME UP SHORT 5-4

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies went back and forth with the Carolina Mudcats tonight, falling just short in a 5-4 loss at Smokies Park in front of 4,241 fans Saturday night.

The Mudcats scored in the 1st inning, which has been a reoccurring theme for Carolina this series. Leadoff hitter Dante Brinkley hit a 0-2 pitch by Paul Schappert for a home run to take the early 1-0 lead. In the second inning, Brett Carroll continued to impress the hometown crowd with his second homerun of the series, putting Carolina up 2-0.

In the 3rd inning, Sam Fuld, in his new leadoff spot, hit a double to right center. He then moved to third on a great sacrifice bunt by Joe Simokaitis. Josh Kroeger then crushed a ball out of the stadium to tie the game 2-2. The 410 ft. homerun was Kroeger’s second of the year.

Carolina took the lead back in the next inning, thanks to a hit batsman by starter Paul Schappert. In the 5th, the Smokies tied the score 3-3 after a Kroeger RBI single to left. Matt Craig, fresh off the disabled list, led off the inning with a base hit, moved over on a bunt by Fuld, and scored easily on the single by Kroeger.

The lead did not last long for the Smokies, as the Mudcats scored a run in the 6th after back to back singles by Jai Miller and Rex Rundgren. The single to right prompted a great throw from Kroeger, but the ball came loose at the last moment, giving Carolina the lead back 4-3.

In the 8th, Jorge Cortes was hit by a pitch then moved to second on a single by Brian Dopirak. Gary Cates hit a single to right and Cortes beat the throw home to once again tie the contest, 4-4. The rally was not enough though as the Mudcats scored a run in the 9th with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Bear and with the help of a two-base throwing error by Geoffrey Jones (0-1).

Craig Molldrem (1-1) picked up the win for Carolina, with Kurt Koehler picking up his third save of the season.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Extra-Inning Affair in Jupiter Ends in Daytona's Favor, 5-4

Opportunistic Cubs Improve Road Record

Matt Martinez

[JUPITER,FL] The Cubs (12-10) needed 10 innings to beat Jupiter(9-13) Saturday night, 5-4.

It took a quality spot start by Jesse Estrada and a cast of Daytona relievers to hold off the Hammerheads, but the Cubs came through to take two out of three. Estrada threw five innings and scattered four hits while striking out nine. Estrada loked dominant, but Jupiter managed to score four runs off the righty, most of which on a three run bomb by Vince Harrison in the fourth to square the game at 4 a piece.

Daytona scored their runs early. Chris Amador led off the game with a triple, and Matt Matulia promptly drove him in with a double on the very next pitch. Jesus Valdez singled home Matulia to put Daytona up 2-0 after one half inning of play.

Ryan Norwood led off the second with a base hit, Nate Spears singled to right and Jake Muyco bounced an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Chris Amador hit into a double-play to bring in Norwood from third and Matulia rocked a triple to the gap to bring in Spears and give Daytona a four-run advantage.

After Jupiter's two inning four-run outburst, the Cubs and Hammerheads bats fell asleep. Mauro Zarate threw three scoreless for Jupiter as John Mueller did the same for Daytona. The Cubs left Matulia stranded on third base in the top of the ninth and after an eventful first appearance of 2007 for Mike Phelps in the bottom half of the ninth, the game was still knotted at 4.

The tenth inning began with a lazy fly ball hit by Cub's third baseman Kyle Reynolds to record the first out. Ryan Norwood followed with a seeing-eye single into left field to put the go-ahead run on first. Jody Davis pich ran for Norwood, sending the speedy Mark Reed to first for the lumbering first baseman. Reed looked to be caught stealing second, but a faulty tag left Reed standing in scoring position with the streaking Spears at bat. Spears came through with a loud double down the line to score Reed from second and give Daytona the one-run advantage.

Matt Avery came in to close out the game and was marvelous, sitting down the Hammerheads in order to record his fifth save in as many tries.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Jospeh, Chiefs Beat Whitecaps 4-2

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs picked up consecutive wins at home for the first time this season with a 4-2 win over West Michigan. The Chiefs are now 11-8 on the season and just a half game out of first place.

Peoria jumped out to an early lead with a rare home run. With one out in the top of the first, Andrew Lopez singled to right off Caps starter Jonah Nickerson. Alfred Joseph stepped to the plate and rifled a two-run homer into the left field berm for a 2-0 Chiefs lead. The home run was just the ninth this season for Peoria in 19 games.

After going quietly in the first against Chiefs hurler Jake Renshaw, the Whitecaps rallied in the second inning. Deik Scram walked and went to third on a hit-and-run single from Audy Ciriaco. Michael Bertram got the Caps on the board with a fielders’ choice grounder and moved to second on a passed ball. After a fly out, Brandon Timm tied the game 2-2 with a single up the middle.

Both starters settled in after the second inning, as Renshaw left the game after five innings allowing just the two runs on three hits for his second straight no decision Nickerson worked seven innings while allowing five hits and three runs with nine strikeouts.

Matt Camp sliced a one out single to left field and stole second base with two outs in the sixth inning. Joseph lined an opposite field single to pick up his third RBI of the game and give the Chiefs the lead for the second time on the night at 3-2.

The Chiefs added an insurance run in the eighth inning after Dylan Johnston reached on a walk and stole second base. Camp picked up his second hit of the game and eighth RBI of the season to extend the Chiefs lead to 4-2.

Rocky Roquet worked a scoreless ninth for the second straight night to pick up his fifth save which ties him for the league lead. Jeremy Papelbon pitched three innings of scoreless relief to pick up his first win.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Alfred Joseph (LF)- Alfred drove in three of the four runs on the night including a two run homer to left field in the first inning. Joseph also drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Notes…The crowd of 4,209 was the largest since opening night…Joseph matched a career high with three RBI in a game…Roquet has worked 10.2 consecutive innings without allowing a run while converting five saves.

I had figured the only reason Walker started the year at AA was because Pie started at AAA so I'm not surprised to see him move up. I am surprised that they waited over a week after Pie's promotion to do it.

I wonder if he will stay at AAA if Pie is sent back down.

It would seem that by moving Walker to AAA, Pie will not be the one sent back down on Tuesday.

That's my thinking. I think they kept Walker at AA until they made a decision on Pie, rather than promoting him to AAA and then sending him back down a week later. In fact, it may be a sign that the Cubs aren't planning to send any outfielder down.

Ludwick now batting over .350 with 7 hrs and 29 rbis and we have to deal with Skip Schumaker on our bench batting .200. I know Ludwick hasnt done all that well in his previous stints in the majors, but its not like Skip has either.
