I heard Dan Patrick talk about this while on the road. Patrick was pointing out how random it was when Gary talked about it and then played the clip. He kind of mentioned it like it was common knowledge and went back to the game. Pretty strange.

It was a bloody sock from the World Series that was donated to the HOF. Apparently the sock from the ALCS was kept. This according to ESPN.

Oh crap, I hadn't realized I was supposed to care about this.

Bloody sock or no bloody sock, what Schill did to the Yanks was real. The sock is of little consequence.

My BS meter is red-lining on this one. Mirabelli should have just admitted he was joking.

It's common knowledge that Schilling loves the spotlight. His teammates and managers even gave him crap because he always knew when the dugout camera was on, and would sit by it with a gritty game face when the light went on. I can easily imagine how that kind of personality can become the butt of some serious practical jokes.

Good, at least I am not the only one who feels this way.

Dr. Bill Morgan, who was the Red Sox's team physician at the time, released this statement this afternoon:

"It's hard to fathom where a statement like this would come from. Obviously, we put sutures in Curt Schilling's ankle right before he went out to pitch in a professional-level baseball game. Sutures will pull with movement, and we completely expected a certain amount of blood to ooze from the wound. Socks are like sponges, and even a small amount of blood can soak a sock."

What I found interesting about that statement is that Morgan did not address whether the sock did in fact have blood on it, only saying he expected there to be blood. There's a difference.

I'm not sure who's a bigger idiot. Gary Thorne or the guy that wrote this story.

I agree in a universal sense, this story doesn't mean much. However, I would be interested to know if the sock was stained with real blood or not. I remember the media making a huge story out of that game and Schilling's ability to pitch out while he was bleeding. It is true that he pitched a tremendous game regardless of the blood, but for him to allow the media to pick up and run with the story (if it was fake), would really put a cloud over his character.

i'm going to go out on a limb and bet that gary thorne doesn't come up with any more big scoops for a while. revealing your sources only to have them deny your story can't be good for a journalist's career.

I blew out my left knee in martial arts class (two meniscus tears and a torn ACL). Played a double-header for our softball team two days later and went 8/10 with 2 HR's and 3 2B's with a knee that was "wobbly" and swollen larger than the 12 inch ball we were using.

PHHHH! Schilling is a wuss.

Schilling is an attention-whore, but I doubt even he would paint his freakin' sock to make it look bloody.

I don't for one second doubt that he would do it.

And Gary Thorne has been around. That means two things. First, he's probably not full of it. But second, he should have realized the poopstorm this was going to cause.
