This season is done. 5 games back and in last place already. 0-10 in close games. Just call up the kids already and get them some playing time. At least we have one more year to avoid the 100-year futility mark. Go....Cubs. bleh

Never too early.

I would be absolutely shocked if this current team could play consistently enough to make up a 5 game deficit.

That's the scary part. I find it hard to believe they can win serveral games in a row, to even make a run at it.

One of the worst Cub teams of my lifetime.

An absolutely horrible collection of bad and overrated baseball players.

Although Philly just won three straight and they are a bad, bad team...

But yes so far this is the most overrated baseball players since 2004.

Your later statement could prove to be correct.

Your former statement indicates that you are no more than 15 yrs old.

The problem, as always with the Cubs, is that for every D Lee there's an Izturis. For every Aramis there's a Cedeno. Without some decent balance on the bench and in the bullpen, they are doomed.

And welcome to Cubville. They get pretty good starting pitching, and can't get anyone out at the end of a game. Same old Cubs. At least one thing in my life is consistent.

The Cubs had some bad teams in the mid to late 1970s and the early 1980s. This team is worse. Much, much worse.

What makes this team worse than any other? No way, these guys aren't nearly as pathetic as many other teams over the last 25 years, not after 19 games anyway. Give it another month before they get the gold star for futility.

This team may be playing horribly, but you can't possibly say that this collection of players is worse than the teams that featured Scott Servais, Jose Reyes, Scott Bullett, Tuffy Rhodes, Frank Castillo, Jim Bullinger, Mark Clark, Mel Rojas, Kevin Orie or Rey Sanchez

It's not even worse than last year's team.

Don't forget Lenny Harris on that distinguished list. Relax people, they suck, but they aren't that bad. Lou can't change 100 years of futility in 19 games.

In the world of the Chicago Cubs, a fatalist is also known as a "realist".

Best post I've seen in a while. I find it funny that every year there are fans that laugh at the "panic early" fans, when they are the ones usually right. The Cubs are the most predictable thing in sports. And, I like a fool, believe every year that this is our year. It's a sickness! It really is...

The season is far from over. There's plenty of time to turn the ship around. Do things look bad? Certainly. There is also some positives as well. My hope is that what we've seen from the bullpen is an aberration and it will be fixed shortly. Our offense is scoring enough runs to win games and overall, our pitching and defense is preventing enough runs.

I'm hoping the "luck" factor begins to even out over the next few weeks. In this division, we will have a chance if we don't scuffle too much more.

I'm not going to write off the season just yet, but I'm definitely starting to panic. How could you *NOT* panic with what you've seen? It's typical Cubs, find-a-way-to-lose baseball.

We've seen this movie before, ladies and gents. And it usually ends with us out of the playoffs.

I've been a Cub fan for over 50 years, so I know I've tasted too much of the Kool-Aide, but I think it's irrational too panic this early. A player like Soriano is going to start hitting and Zambrano will start pitching (unless he's injured). The good that may come out of this poor start is that Hendry might be forced to make a blockbuster deal sometime during the season. With their poor play, I would think Jones, Miller, Cedeno, Eyre, and Izturis are trade bait. If Guzman, Cherry, and/or Marmol come up and show something, the trade bait could include Zambrano and Howry.

Wow, unbelievable. Not even in the same solar system as the truth. Yes, the start is very disappointing, but the offense has been scoring runs lately, the starting pitching has been very good for the most part, and the bullpen as a whole hasn't been that bad (Eyre has been horrendous, Howry has been OK, Wuertz and Cotts are still unscored on, Dempster has been great except for one game). The division is weak; there's still plenty of time to put it together. Reason for concern? Yes. Time to mail in the season? Not even remotely close.

The truth is that these games count the same as games in September. However, we're not at the point of a firesale.

I think the difference between this year's team is that last year's team really was bad enough to lose 96 games. They deserved to lose 96 games. That team, on paper, was horrid. This team really is not that bad on paper, and their luck evens out or even stops being absurdly bad, they'll be better than the 2006 Cubs.
