what is it now, 85 plate appearances now?

19 games. i wager lee doesn't hit a single home run this year, unless it's inside the park. judging at how lucky he's getting on balls in play, that could be a possibility.

Wait. I was reading this thread, and I completely thought this was sarcasm or a joke until I read the rest of your posts in this thread and started to suspect otherwise.

You can't be serious, can you?

Were you seriously predicting that Lee would go all year without a home run?

I mean, he has a murderous dictator in his avatar, which unless sarcastic, doesn't leave me to believe reason stands in his way.

The hyperbole in this thread is astouding.

None of the people saying that his power was leaving him never said he wasn't a vastly valuable player, but a lot of his value came from his power.

If he can still hit .300+ get on base 40% of the time and still slug more than .500 he's an incredible valuable player and one of the best 15 or so players in the whole major leagues.

He just wont be the best like he was in 2005.

It bears repeating.

Derrek Lee's OPS in 2007 = 1.034

Derrek Lee's rank in the NL in doubles = 2nd

Just because you aren't putting the ball in the seats doesn't mean you're not hitting for power.

Holy Crap, you pretty much repeated what I said.

Lee's comment on the matter:

"Honestly, I haven't been too worried about it," Lee said. "I feel really good at the plate and like I said, home runs are mostly by accident. And today it just happened to be a higher pitch and got into the air. My home runs are going to come."

I found the bolded part quite interesting-I've never heard a player phrase it in quite that way before.

I think baseball fundamentals says you just swing for contact...and if you hit a home run, you got the luck of the draw. I think there are definitely times when a player goes up thinking homerun, obviously if you are down by 2 with 2 men on base in the 9th, and your power hitter is up, you think home run. But more times than not, swinging for the fences doesn't produce the desired result.

A lot of that slg% is singles driven because he has a jesus christ like .485 babip. When that goes down, and it surely will, that slugging percentage will plummet unless he starts hitting the ball out of the park again.

This is very simple guys, I don't know how you keep getting it wrong.

Maybe it will, but the fact is Lee's been productive. And he's going to hit home runs again. This isn't the first April Lee's had where he hasn't been hitting homers.

Jesus's BABIP was never above 440.

Last year he had 3 HR in just 44 april AB (.614 slg%)

in 2005 he had 7

in 2004 he had 2, but was only hitting .233

in 2003 he had 4, but hit just .272

in 2002 he had 5, even though he was hitting just .221

The fact that he's making so much contact and is still not hitting home runs is a little disconcerting. I'm sure it will come back on eventually, but to what extent? This little power outage came after a wrist break, I know that correlation doesnt equal causation, but it still worries me.

I can't believe that people are criticizing Lee. His slugging % right now is higher than any other NL first basemen. Lee is magnificant as a hitter.

I don't think anyone's criticizing Lee. On the contrary, we've all been impressed by his hitting so far, but some are worried about his power.

i wasn't predicting he'd go all year without a home run, i was using a sort of superstitious pessimism that i'm sure most cubs fans are familiar with. it worked, i guess.

anyhoo, we're still in trouble if he can't find his power stroke on a consistent basis.

he is one far out dude that is for sure... watch where they are pitching lee and where he is hitting it too, i've seriously seen them pitch inside on him about 10 times and about 5 of those have been rocketed for doubles and his 1 homer. He's hitting like .380 for christ sakes the pitchers will adjust and come inside more and his power will show up.

his BABIP is like .500, neauxb. that's bound to come down a hair. if you want to know what that means, it means that 50% of the balls he puts in play are going for hits, which means he's getting incredibly lucky--even with a LD% of 30%.
