If we're talking trades, why not mention Hughes or Linecum?

not that july is before this, but remember two things

1) teams wont trade said prospects for two months of zambrano.

2) lincecum cant be traded until 366 days after he was drafted

Under the right circumstances, I could see a Zambrano + Murton for Santana + Wood deal working for both teams.

I too think the Angels are the trading partner to deal with since they have the prospects and the money to sign Z to an extension.

Definitely.

To elaborate, the circumstances that at least some of would make a Z/Murton for Santana/Wood deal feasible:

Z returning to form

Murton playing well

Weaver pitching well

Aybar and/or Izturis/Figgins playing well

Pie proving he belongs in MLB offensively

Garret Anderson continuing to be an offensive black hole

If the Cubs aren't going to re-sign him then they MUST trade him and get a good return. Losing him for nothing is not an option.
This is the Cubs we're talking about. It's always an option. A terrible option but one I could see happening.

The Cubs fire Hendry at the end of the season, they do a "deliberate" search for a new GM. In the meantime Z signs with the Yankees for 5 years and $100,000,000.

It's actually 1 year after he was signed... June 30th.

To your fine list of circumstances, I would also add "Cubs giving Angels permission to talk contract extension with Zambrano."

That might be the core of a deal, but I would think it would take some tweaking since Zambrano (although a possible free agent)>Santana and Murton (so far in the majors)>Wood.

I was under the impression that Wood will be the far superior player, if not this year than in the future.

You're right.

But we already have a SS.

A Gold Glove SS at that.

One that drives in runs with his glove.

Well, it's not like the Cubs were going to announce an 80 million dollar extension after Zambrano stinks it up for three straight starts.

At the end of the year, it may be Zambrano who regrets not signing before the season started, not Cubs management.

Technically yes.

Bingo. Good call.
