Seriously, why doesn't David Stern go out of his way to completely sabotage the Pistons?

 

They play an absolutely unwatchable, yet fundamentally sound, game. They have atrocious fans, as evidenced by the Malice at the Palace. Their players whine about every foul called on them, yet make some incredibly hard fouls.

 

Seriously, does anyone outside of Michigan and Texas want to see a Pistons/Spurs series? Don't we all remember how much of a catastrophe that was?

I'm not sure there's a rule that makes less sense. If you innocently foul someone at half court with nobody else between you and the basket, it's a free path foul. If you hack someone 50 feet away from the ball at the same time someone is about to lay one in, it's just a foul.

It's one rule that college basketball has right ("intentional foul" - there are no two ways around it).

I went on a mini-rant about this to my editor a few days ago. One of the guest columnists on Rome is Burning (yes, I know but don't say anything) said that after San Antonio beat Phoenix in Game 1 that we were headed for a Spurs-Pistons final and it would be one of the best of all time. All I could do was groan at both the idea and his opinion. Regardless of what I think about the teams, I wouldn't watch that series until Game 6 or 7. I just have no desire to watch that type of basketball. It's just flat out boring. This is why the NBA needs a 20 second shot clock.
