Today's weather is craptastic right now, and the forecast doesn't look any better (heavier snow predicted for the north side and north suburbs). I have tickets for today's game and I was just wondering if there's any particular timeframe for the Cubs to decide to postpone a game for weather reasons?

I really don't want to head out there in this slushy mess, only to have the game called after I'm there.

Thanks!

My understanding is that it's the home team's call anytime up until the game begins, but after the game begins it's in the hands of the umpires. So the Cubs could call it as early as now, or they could wait until the scheduled starting time or later to see if it clears up.

That's pretty much what I was guessing.

Thanks, NC. I just hope they call it before I have to leave work.

Don't really want to sit in that stuff if I can avoid it.

So if the game is snowed out can we skip Miller and Marquis this time around?

No-this actually negates a little of the good in skipping Miller if this game is snowed out because he'll only have 6 games in between starts instead of 7. It wouldn't help in skipping Marquis as the Cubs have 13 straight games starting Friday, and since Marquis was the last pitcher to pitch anyway even if he pitches the 5th game of that he would be taking his normal turn.

Seriously, guys, there's NO WAY they can play. I'm up this way and the sleet is hitting my front window so hard it sounds like hail. The wind is blowing about 30 mph, and when it's in your face, you can't breathe. NO WAY they're playing today.

If the worst of that junk passes within the next 3 hours, and the field isn't destroyed by then. I could see them playing through what would be a cold misty type game. They've definitely played in that kind of stuff before. But if what is there now stays, we have to wait until Friday for the first crack at a home victory.

Since this is a divisional opponent whom they play at home again right after the all star break and again at the end of August, I'm guessing they won't hesitate to cancel, however. They could probably schedule a day/night doubleheader and sell whatever remaining tickets they have for this game, plus sell a lot more at the concessions.

It works in the favor of the Cobs too, who are playing pretty pathetic baseball at the present time.

My thoughts exactly. Two days off to "warm up" for cincy woudl be fine by me...seriously...who made the schedule this year...only 2 games in a 3 week period on the road in April...and that is a stupid 2 game trip to atlanta....we should be playing, FLA/ATL/HOU/SD/MIL/LA/ARZ road trips this month....

The game has officially been postponed. Rescheduled for July 12th.

Yay 2 off days and no Bulls to keep me entertained either.

So I'm guessing that Lou won't skip Hill's start, and the rotation for the Cinci series will be

Friday - Hill

Saturday - Zambrano

Sunday - Lilly

That's a good question, I was thinking the same thing. The Cubs.com headline gives the impression that Hill will miss a start--not that he will be moved up to Friday. I wish that were the case.

Cubs southpaw Rich Hill was forced to miss his second start of the season on Wednesday as the Cubs-Astros game at Wrigley Field was postponed due to snowy weather. The game has been rescheduled for July 12

why the hell arent they making it up tomorrow? [expletive]. Doesnt Houston have an offday too?

Not sure why it's "[expletive]". The weather is going to such through the weekend. There's no guarantee they'd get the game in tomorrow, and there's no reason to keep Houston here in case they can get the game in.

The weather tomorrow is sketchy but that isn't the primary reason for the postponement. There is a big issue with short notice for fans and TV and radio programming for a national audience (including all of the affiliate stations that would have to change programming to accommodate the broadcast).

Was this a national game? I didn't notice. Teams postpone games on one day's notice all the time. I don't think that's an issue.

Why would they skip Hill that would make absolutely no sense at all.

The only reason I can think of it is this. They are very concerned about keeping Z on as close to correct rest as possible. So they have a motivation to pitch him on Friday. Then comes the question-do you change the order on Saturday and pitch Hill, then Marquis, then Lilly-or do you pitch Lilly, Marquis, Hill (maintaining the R/L/R order)-it is certainly possible then that they would just maintain the order they went with at the start of the season and pitch Z on Friday, Lilly Saturday, Marquis Sunday, and Hill Monday. It all revolves around how much rest they want Z to get.
