ESPN AM 1000 just reported, on its Sports Center Update, that Zambrano confirmed today the Cubs have a formal 5 year offer on the table. His agents will try to hammer out the specifics this weekend with Hendry. Zambrano also reiterated that he wants the contract completed before Opening Day b/c he won't negotiate during the season.

I'm very optimistic this will get done!

Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.

I'll admit, I'm a little worried about a 5 year deal too. But I'd rather have him for 5 years and get 3 good years out of him, than not have him at all. (Same way I feel about the Soriano contract)

Just for the record, I'm not saying that Z will only have 3 good years. I'm just saying these contracts have a way of biting teams in the @$$.

Yeah. Might as well go for it, and try to build around Lee, Ram, Sori, and Z while they are all still very good for atleast the next few years. Hoping a few of your pitching and position prospects pan out during that time.

"Hopefully, we can get the deal done by Opening Day," Zambrano said. "I want to sign here, I want to stay with the Cubs."

Also...

Cubs manager Lou Piniella will have a team meeting in Cincinnati on Sunday with the final 25-man roster. He prefers to meet one-on-one with the players.

"I think if you have too many team meetings, they lose their focus," Piniella said. "It's not the easiest thing in the world to hold an athlete's attention too long. They've got their mind on things."

I just heard on the radio that Zambrano, supposedly, told ESPN AM 1000 his 2007 record will be 22-7.

I don't understand why some people are so adamant about getting a deal done without knowing the exact cost. Sure we can come up with estimates about what Carlos could/will receive if an extension is agreed to, but I'd rather wait for the details before I go like this:

Tribune confirmation of an offer:

The Cubs finally have made Zambrano an offer, and now it's up to Zambrano to decide whether he wants to stay for less money than he might be able to get on the open market in November.

Whatever decision they make is best for him." "My point is, he needs to pitch. I don't think he'll be pitching a long time in Triple A. He's earning three-point-something ($3.575 million), and I think he deserves to be here.

"He just needs to pitch a little bit more and get his confidence back. As soon as he gets everything correct, he will be here and he will be a great pitcher, I will say that."

Thank you. Thank you. I thought I was the only one thinking this.

People want the deal consummated so there isn't a risk that Zambrano will be lost to free agency! We won't know the exact cost until a deal is done; the negotiations aren't public and fans don't have the option to submit an offer.

At this point, with all the other money that has been committed this offseason, the Cubs would be foolish to quibble too much over cost. That's not to say that negotiations aren't in order (because no GM wants to pay a $1.00 more than it will take to get the player to sign) but this team is built to make a run within the next 3 seasons (the same number of guaranteed years Piniella is signed to manage--he also has a 4th option year). Losing the ace of the staff severely limits the plan by handicapping an already questionable pitching staff. If the Cubs are serious about winning, and I think they are, Hendry will make sure that Z is signed.

Zambrano doesn't talk about losses, that "record" is wins and home runs he'll hit this year.
