  1. One thing that the broadcasters were commenting on during Wednesday night's game was how it appeared the Reds hitters were having a hard time picking up the ball from Lilly's hand. I'll be interested to see what happens the second time around, both for the Reds and the rest of the league (assuming Lilly has continued success the first time through).
  2. as an unemployment grad with my student id, this seems like an excellent way to spend my time we gotta find that code
  3. wasn't Pole one of Maddux's original pitching coaches?
  4. gotta start turning these singles into doubles and homers
  5. co-sign, I just found a BP-quality post from back in the day about Soriano at the top of the lineup and although its a small sample size, tonights Lilly/Arroyo game is making him look awfully prescient Maybe you could ask kroth1342 whatever happened to him, since you share the same IP. blasted technology (although I was waiting for someone to run an IP check) I'm just enjoying this performance by Lilly
  6. With no search function how did you find this thread? Bookmark? about a million clicks through the forum
  7. Okay, I'd say that my biggest problem with this message board is people overreaction to the most minor events and daily changes in the Cubs universe. For example, I remember after Mark Prior had his good ST outing (don't remember which one it was) that someone had his 2008 or 2009 salary at $10+ million. Then Prior has a bad outing, and are (unsurprisingly) posts about trading, releasing, or figuring out what to do with Prior. Oh, but god forbid someone makes a "Prior towel drill" or "Prior injury" joke, because the lords of the board who decide what is and isn't appropriate will smote thee down. Obviously no one is pleased with Soriano's play up to this point (6th inning against Arroyo), but what I was impressed with was kroth1342's ability to taking something from BP (a website the majority of the board reads/co-signs) and apply it to the Cubs' acquisition of Soriano and our need for increased OBP at the top of the lineup. I found it an intelligent, innovative post, markedly different from the usual short, sound bite-esque posts that can dominate this board at time. It was an inciteful attempt to stimulate discussion on the board. In the future, I'd certainly like to read more posts like this, and that's why I was uppin it.

  9. uppin this powerful thread
  10. Tell that to all the boxers that are walking the streets. Tell that to Kareem Abdul Jabbar who was broke when his career ended. A guy's arm could fall off tomorrow and his career will be over. You get what you can get when you can get it. Period. I suppose these guys could live off the interest of their 4-5 million, but wouldn't they be giving up a significant portion of the lifestyle they had been living while they were still playing the game? Why give that up if you could live off the interest of even more than 4-5 million? To ask the question another way....... You're currently the manager of the McDonald's down the street. You make $13.00 an hour and get good benefits. You've been with McDonald's for 8 years now, and you're pretty pleased with how things have worked out for you. Are you so loyal to them that you would turn down $17.00 an hour to be the manager at Burger King with the same benefits? Is McDonald's treating you so well that you'd be willing to pass over $8,320 of increased annual income to keep grilling burgers? Do you like that "hometown discount"? To me, I think that my current employer is raking me over the coals and tomorrow I'll be broiling burgers instead of grilling them. Baseball isn't a job you can hold onto until you are age 65. Most players are out of the game before they reach 35. Some of these guys never got an education to speak of, and they will need to learn how to manage their money fast, or it will be gone as quickly as it came. And there is NO job that will pay them anywhere close to what they are getting now, so you get what you can get while you can. If you were in Zambrano's shoes, you'd be asking for as much as you could squeeze out of the Cubs. And you aren't just negotiating by yourself. You have your agent, your family members and the players union all making sure you take what you have coming. You might need this... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marginal_utility#The_.E2.80.9Claw.E2.80.9D_of_diminishing_marginal_utility The situations are a little different.
  11. Kevin Goldstein, Christina Kahrl, and Rany Jazayerli of Baseball Prospectus are scheduled to be at DePaul's Loop Campus at 5pm tonight for a talk. Address is 1 East Jackson Blvd. Anyone planning on attending?
  12. I don't understand why some people are so adamant about getting a deal done without knowing the exact cost. Sure we can come up with estimates about what Carlos could/will receive if an extension is agreed to, but I'd rather wait for the details before I go like this: \:D/ or :(
  13. Alrighty then... Some of us have the luxury of working from home with lots of extra time and some of us don't... I'm surprised you're here now! Apparently, every moment of your life is action packed. Well I hope your employer is getting full value for their compensation, because I can't possibly see how much work you can get done with over 30 posts a day. I don't want this to turn into a full fledged e-beef, but I don't mind if I can't keep it on wax and it spills into the streets.
  14. I think the sole reason is that the Cubs understand how easily they can create a home atmosphere in a division rivals park, no more, no less. And by the way, over 2k posts in less than two months time, http://www.merel.us/Joker/Cartoons/Toons1/images/Get%20a%20Life_gif.jpg
