Big Z for ARod is the best bet. I love Z as much as anyone, but it just seems like you never know what Z is going to show up. We let Prior just fizzle and now he has no trade value. IMO the Cubs need to trade high for once. An added bonus would be that he would be in the AL.

Z is a good ace the same way Harang is a good ace. In that he is better than everybody else on a very bad pitching staff. Look at Zambrano's ERA the last couple of years. Nowhere CLOSE to stellar. And his huge BB rate is a concern for a guy you are prepared to pay $90 million dollars to for 5 years.

I think it's best he IS traded for something really good or a bundle of highly touted major league ready prospects.

This is where not going all out on Matsuzaka is looking bad. We now have Lilly and Marquis, neither of them are above a "#3 calibur guy". If we had Matsuzaka, and traded Z for someone like A-rod. Well atleast you have Hill and Matsuzaka to cement the top of the rotation. Now, you only have Hill.

Carlos had a 5.35 ERA last April and a 4.31 ERA the April before. He's been a notoriously slow starter. While I don't like the amount of walks he's giving up, I'm not worried about him.

I'm concerned that his Aprils continue to suck. But yes, it *should* get better.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Zambrano will not be pitching for the Chicago Cubs in 2008.

If this happens there will only be one person to blame/credit Jim Hendry.

You mean the Trib doesn't have anything to do with giving the go ahead to a deal Z/Hendry have worked out already? That's the holdup.

Do have to say, I know that hindsight is 20/20 but that time not talking contracts prior to and at the start of spring training sure feels like wasted time now. Maybe a 5 year deal could have been worked out before the clock ran out. :x

Sounds like 20/20 to me. Carlos had every reason to wait until FA knocks before signing with the Cubs. He was a horse, so the "guaranteed dollars" argument that drives most contract extensions doesn't have a lot of influence in this case. He's healthy and productive. Why sign early? I can't imagine there's too many agents out there that would recommend that strategy in Z's case.

Z's agent might also wish to delay any further contract talks until his client stops sucking. That's my grand contribution to this thread, thanks.

And a grand contribution it was sir! That might be part of it, the other part is that the trib is currently being sold and ofcourse a big contract like this is probably rare in those situations. That's all there is to it.
