For once, Sox fans were right. This guy is awful. Our Favorite Manager seems to share the sentiment:

What does Piniella see in Neal Cotts? "I see he gives up runs every time he pitches," Piniella said. Cotts has allowed eight runs in eight innings, including two Saturday.

God, I really like Lou Piniella.

what a dumb trade. we didn't need another lefty and for the love of God everyone should have known 2005 wasn't the norm with him.

Meh. The trade was pretty much a wash. Aardsma is looking almost as bad this spring.

At least Aardsma was a league leader. Alphabetically.

He sits ahead of every other major leaguer in history. Link.

The bad thing about the Cotts situation is that Hendry would never Release him or send him to the minors because it would make him look bad for making the trade. I know it is only spring training, but the way he is pitching he does not deserve a spot on the team.

Release him, probably not. Send him to the minors, I think he might. He traded Aardsma to get Cotts; it's not like he traded an all-star or a can't-miss prospect.

Not sure how dumb it was. He traded Aardsma, who doesn't have much upside at all, for Cotts, who sucks but had one year where he somehow pitched well.

Eh, it's trading junk for junk mostly. Oh well.

Kudos to Piniella for his comments. Those words were *not* for Cotts, who is finished in all likelihood. They were for all the other players on this team, who if they haven't already are now realizing Lou will most definitely notice and call out poor performance. Yay!

Don't forget that Cotts is a lefty, so he will bounce around for awhile even though he sucks.

Lou may be considering Guzman as his long man. Hopefully, that pushes Cotts out of the bullpen altogether...

Wittenmyer/Suntimes

...Michael Wuertz and Roberto Novoa, both of whom are throwing to hitters but remain behind schedule. And newly ordained long reliever Neal Cotts looked shaky again in one inning of work Saturday.

But Piniella said he's not worried about depth in the bullpen.

''Because I've got a couple young kids that I like that are chomping at the bit to make this team,'' he said, referring to short reliever Rocky Cherry and potential long man Angel Guzman. ''We have everything here in place to have a real nice staff. I've got no concerns whatsoever.''

Cotts still has options, so he'll most likely be sent down, and it won't be a big deal.

Does Aardsma have any options left? I'm not sure, but I'm doubtful. That may have been a big reason Hendry made the deal.

i find it curious that people are so worried about cotts while howry's 7.11 era never gets mentioned and many people want a guy with a 6.52 era to be the 5th starter.

Howry was one of the best guys in the bullpen last year while Cotts is coming off a horrible season. It's no wonder Howry gets the benefit of the doubt; he has nothing to prove in ST and I'm sure he'll be fine when the season begins.

Cotts has given up a run in EVERY appearance this Spring. If you read his quotes in the paper/online he too isn't pleased.

"I thought it was going well until [saturday]," Cotts said. "There wasn't a whole lot of good to take out of it. I was rushing, and the throws were up. The time bfore, the ball was getting down. Also, I fell behind batters early."

That's not a good formula for success. Is the problem Arizona? It's tough to gauge pitching here.

"I don't think so," said Cotts, a left-hander acquired during the offseason from the White Sox for David Aardsma. "You have to make pitches, no matter where you are. Everybody else has pitched well here."

Because besides 2005 Cotts has been pretty bad, while Howry's been good for the past three years. As for the 5th starter. It's going to be Miller. Guzman will be the longman. You can set that in stone.

I wouldn't set that in stone, only because by May it could all be different. Miller might make it to the opening day roster, but the guy is no more reliable than Prior or Wood have been in recent years.

Oh I agree. Nothing it set in stone for the entire year. Espically with the Cubs. I wouldn't doubt Miller or anyone else getting hurt and Gooz taking over.

Don't count on Neal Cotts being demoted. Bruce Miles reports that Cotts is still in the bullpen equation.

Even though Neal Cotts has struggled, he appears in the bullpen mix, along with Scott Eyre, Will Ohman, Ryan Dempster, Bob Howry and perhaps Angel Guzman.

That leaves one spot open. Kerry Wood is questionable, as are Michael Wuertz and Roberto Novoa, who have battled shoulder problems this spring. Wuertz still could make a late charge, but Piniella hasn’t counted out rookie Rocky Cherry.

No surprise there. There's two weeks left, he should still be in the mix, but I can almost guarantee that if he continues to struggle he's not going to make this club.

I'm not so sure. I think Cotts will start the season in the bullpen regardless of his ST results. However, the Cubs may make a move in-season if warranted.

I agree but this is a unique situation--with an intracity trade--demoting him prior to the start of the season would be to admit that the Sox got the better end of the trade.

This same issue is happening with the Sox because Aardsma has pitched poorly as well.
