Mariotti is the guy who once called John Elway a "greedy and scared punk." Then he won the Super Bowl.

Didn't he also claim the White Sox were dead during the '05 season? Oops.

If Mariotti says Prior is done, then I feel better about his chances to get back.

comparing Jay to Bruce isn't fair, as they are asked to do different things. I'm not going to say Mariotti is some great journalist or anything, but comparing a beat writer with a editorial columnist is really apples and oranges

I don't think so. It's like comparing a pitcher and a hitter. They are both still baseball players, even though they are asked to do different things. You can trade one for the other, value one over the other, etc. We've seen there are "Mariotti" type beat writers as well as columnists. Bruce is a writer who appears to stick to the facts and just tell the story. He writes columns from time to time (like today) that express opinion. But instead of just going on a Jay rant, he simply talks about the baseball team and what it can, and should do to win more games.

sure, I'm just saying that people who complain that Mariotti isn't using facts and stats in his column don't understand that he's paid for his opinion. I'm not saying he does a good job of it, or that he isn't purposely stirring the pot.

Don't understand? Perhaps they believe he should use facts to back up his opinion.

If you could fight anybody, dead or alive, who would it be?

Mariotti. I would fight Jay Mariotti.

Ozzie or Kenny. Someone needs to hit them.

i understand that it's his opinion, but that doesn't mean he's not terrible at what he does.

He's actually very good at what he does...He creates controversy.

Exactly-he gets lots of people to read his column without breaking rules-that's his job description.

Judging a "journalist" by the number of newspapers he sells is like judging a movie by the number of tickets it sells.

a)There are good movies that generate big box office numbers.

b) There are bad movies that generate big box office numbers.

c) There are good movies that perform poorly at the box office.

d) There are bad movies that perform poorly at the box office.

Mariott's work falls under choice (b).

and yet you all still read his column
I don't. I would be willing to bet that a lot of people who post in this thread don't either. I don't have to listen to Limbaugh to know he is a pompas windbag. I don't have to read Marrotti to know he is one either.

I don't think there are a lot of people who buy a newspaper becuase Lupica or Marrotti or Ryan write for it.

Think about this:

A Mariotti topic is currently atop the board of this forum(and I'm sure many other MB's) it is shock journalism, and that is the only reason the Sun Times keeps him around. People know they read his crap.

no one should buy that newspaper. the Sun-Times is total trash. 6 pages of news and 6 pages of sports sandwiching 120 pages of car ads. All at a 2nd grade reading level. You're better off reading Red-Eye

I'd go with the Forrest Gump of journalism

A Mariotti topic is not atop this board. Mariotti's writing style is atop this board. Go ahead and count how many posts are actually talking about what Mariotti wrote.

I don't read the guy. I appreciate a columnist who writes pieces based on facts, Mariotti doesn't do that.

I just don't get the Sun-Times. The tabloid format of the paper is ridiculous for a paper that wants to be taken seriously. However, while the Tribune Co. has far more news resources than the Sun-Times and its parent company, the Tribune isn't exactly known for 'hard-hitting' journalism. The Sun-Times is. They broke the Hired Truck Scandal. So, while I get my business, sports and editorials from the Tribune, the Sun-Times trumps on local politics IMHO.

I used to read the Trib and Sun-Times online (back in college). Then I added the Daily Herald. I removed the Sun-Times from the list years ago. Occasionally, depending on the situation, I'll go there to see what they have, but that's only at times when I'm starving for information, or if there's a big event, like the Super Bowl. But I haven't clicked on a Mariotti column in years. I've read maybe 3 or 4 during that time after clicking on a link here. But I know what Jay has to offer and I've seen him enough on tv to know he's only gotten worse.

I disagree with this. The Sun-Times is best known for it's sports section. Even though Mariotti tends to be a polarizing figure (either you love him or you hate him) many of the people that hate him buy the paper to read his column.

I see this a lot with Sox fans. As you probably are aware, Mariotti has had an on going feud with the White Sox (Reinsdorf, Williams, Guillen, Harrelson and various players). Yet, many of their fans read his stuff religiously (as if to "keep tabs" on what he has to say about the White Sox). They refer to him as "Moronotti" but they always know what he has to say...

I'm a media whore. I read them all online and buy the Sunday Chicago Tribune.

I try to avoid him in print, on the radio, or on the television.

He could have been a contender, though. I gave his short-lived radio show a few listens, and he repeatedly stated that sports reporters should study sports medicine so they could competently discuss injuries.

I don't know why he didn't/doesn't follow through on his own advice. The world needs more Will Carroll-types and fewer Bill Plaschke-types.
