Sean Gallagher's name has been thrown into the 5th starter mix. I don't see that happening at all! I do know Lou likes him. At this point it's going to be Angel Guzman. Edited by 98navigator

Listening to the game on an XM Boombox is awesome. I'm doin' yardwork, I got the game. I'm kickin' back in the sun with a beverage, I got the game. Come inside to get online, I got the game.

If you live outside the Chicago area and can't get the Cubs on regular radio, and you can afford the 13 bucks a month for the programming and the 80 bucks for the boombox, do it.

That said, I see Izturis walked two more times today to bring his spring total to 5. Is it sad that I'm actually keeping track of how many times Izturis draws a walk?

The Cubs as a whole drawing 5 walks against 5 Ks so far today. That makes their spring season total 43 BBs/55 Ks. A good but meaningless ratio.

I went with the MyFi and a pair of really old computer speakers. It's not quite as nice as the boombox, but I can take it anywhere with me.

Hey man, it works.

What do you guys think of the Prior MiLB start? Good idea?

I think it's what he needs. He has to work on getting his game back. He shouldn't be focused on being in competition right now.

As I said yesterday, as long as Guzman keeps throwing the way he has, I'm not going to get worked up over Prior.

I agree which is why I like the Cubs rotation over the Cards rotation right now. Cubs have much more depth and depth with options. If the Cards have anyone blow up right now, they have no one.

I agree. It's what he needs right now.

For whatever reason, (health, mechanics, simple muscle weakness) he's not performing. The question remains whether he will ever be the pitcher he once was. But whatever the reason or eventual outcome, he needs to work on stuff. Confidence, mechanics, all of it. Where he works on that is immaterial. He just needs to improve. When he is ready, if he is ever ready, he will return.

Ron just said Cherry has a good chance to make the team. He and Lou had this discussion last week. I think he's going to make the team.

If he closes this out, it will be his 4th (?) save of the Spring.

I think Gallagher may have taken his name out of it today.

Lou likes Cherry a lot.

So does Santo. He just said that Cherry has a very good chance of making the Cubs.

EDIT: Vance! Gahh, just beat me...

How'd Marquis look today? Was he getting a lot of ground balls? I don't expect great things from him, but I do think he'll keep his ERA around 4 this year.

Cherry has been the most impressive relief pitcher of the Spring-bar none.

He strikes out the side with a walk and stolen base sprinkled in.

Marquis gets the win

Nope, third. HA! You may be faster, but...

Gallagher was mentioned as a long shot just like last season Sean Marshall was. He is a long shot. He's been bad in the big league games but he's impressed in camp itself.

I think a couple of relievers are going to be traded. Eyre would be at the top of the list. Gotta think Cotts and Novoa are other obvious candidates. Wuertz probably is too, though I hope not. Miller is a maybe, depends on how everyone else falls out.

At the end of last season, I would have given Cherry virtually no chance of making the team out of the pen this year. Funny how some guys just fall into place. Kind of like Marshall last year.

Plenty of ground balls. Plenty of contact in general.

He really needs to keep the ball down or he's gonna be in deep trouble.

Effective. He gave up some hits, 6 in 4 innings, but he also induced a couple of inning ending double plays. All told he produce 6 ground ball outs against 2 fly ball outs in 4 innings of play.

I meant, today is the first time I've seen Gallagher's name in print-in relation to the 5th starter job...

It's in the Prior article...

Marquis seems to have rediscovered his sinker. He's looking very good.

I'd caution against saying he has looked "very good". Maybe very good for Marquis but not in general.

I agree that the sinker appears to be working, but he just gave up 6 hits to a spring line-up about half filled with minor leaguers. Now the type of pitcher he is, he's going to give up hits. Hitters are going to make contact off of him, but Marquis can influence what type of contact that will be. He's been effective. He's getting the job done. The defense is going to have to be on their toes when he is pitching because balls will be hit.
