I like Ron as a former Cubs player but if your aim is to get information from the broadcast, Ron isn't the answer. If you listen to the objective analysis of Ron's work it isn't favorable. I hate to be critical of him but some times he doesn't sound like he's prepared.

Dempster was in rare form!

Sometimes he doesn't sound like he's prepared? The point of listening to Ron Santo is to hear someone so passionate, someone who lives and dies with every pitch. I don't listen for a cross between Steve Stone and Baseball Prospectus.

Yes but is that what he's there for? He's like a fan... Sometimes all you get are grunts and if Pat asks him a question sometimes he doesn't know of is ill-informed. I listen to a lot of different calls and there's no doubt he is an acquired taste. On the other hand, Pat is a great broadcaster.

I think the point of Ron Santo the broadcaster is to keep him in baseball and in people's minds to keep his HOF campaign going. The reason it works is because: 1, Pat gets along with him and can cover his faults; 2, the majority of fans (opinion) revere Santo as the voice of the fan.

I agree to a point.

Gallagher is going to get lit up, I hope someone is getting ready...

Lou's pulling out the hit and run a lot... I'm not a big fan of that.

There is absolutely nothing I hate more in baseball than the hit and run.

Quick baseball lesson from "The Book on The Book" by Bill Felber.

"In each category, we begin by calculating the manager's success percentage...The next step is to compare that success percentage to the league average... "

Moving some decimals around, you come up with a number that looks like win%, where the average manager must have .500.

All these numbers taken from the 2003 season.

Sacrifice Bunts:

Macha - .448

Piniella - .442

Steal:

Macha - .553

Piniella - .551

Hit-and-Run:

Piniella - .637

Macha - .616

"Given Macha's evident abilities at both the steal and hit-and-run, what would be the effect on run production of A's management unleashing him? Let's assume each success nets a base and each failure costs on (at twice the penalty in terms of run production). If Macha had used both tactics at the frequency of the league average (130 steal attempts and 72 hit-and-run attempts) wih no performance decline on the part of either himself or his runners, the A's would gain seven-tenths of one run over the course of the season."

As you can see, Piniella rates out slightly above Macha in terms of success, and I'm sure he probably attempted many times more steals and hit-and-runs than league average. Based on what Macha would have gained, I'd say it'd be a stretch to say Piniella gained 4-5 runs over the course of the entire season, in what would be rated as a very good season of managing.

It's a very risky play, and it only takes Lou being wrong 6-8 times more over the course of the season to drive it into negative territory.

In other words, unless Lou is absolutely sure it's the perfect thing to do, it's a pretty horrible idea.

Too bad Fox won't be able to stick defensively at catcher.

There's your RH power off the bench Vance.

He needs regular work in order to try to be able to stay behind the plate. As a third catcher with no other position, he'd never see the field.

He's not going to make the team. And if you think he's capable of becoming a ML-caliber catcher, I agree it's a bad idea. But if his ceiling is a backup catcher, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I see him learning 1B or a corner OF spot if he doesn't make big strides with his defense this year.

i'm not sure if he can stick behind the plate or not. I'm not ready to give up on it though.

Sorry guys, inning over. Don't know how. I was in the john.

No bathroom breaks, Vance. This is serious stuff. Wear an astronaut diaper next time.

I just keep an empty gatorade bottle laying around.

Listening to the game on an XM Boombox is awesome. I'm doin' yardwork, I got the game. I'm kickin' back in the sun with a beverage, I got the game. Come inside to get online, I got the game.

If you live outside the Chicago area and can't get the Cubs on regular radio, and you can afford the 13 bucks a month for the programming and the 80 bucks for the boombox, do it.

That said, I see Izturis walked two more times today to bring his spring total to 5. Is it sad that I'm actually keeping track of how many times Izturis draws a walk?

The Cubs as a whole drawing 5 walks against 5 Ks so far today. That makes their spring season total 43 BBs/55 Ks. A good but meaningless ratio.

I went with the MyFi and a pair of really old computer speakers. It's not quite as nice as the boombox, but I can take it anywhere with me.
