I just watched that 1st inning of Matsuzaka and that was amazing. He might be the best combo of FB, curve, and change from a RH'er since Pedro was in is prime.

Really? I just heard he got roughed up.

I've only watched the 1st two innings and he's been in control. He hung one changeup and one slider, but he hasn't been close to giving up a run.

Just wait...

How'd Marquis look today? Was he getting a lot of ground balls? I don't expect great things from him, but I do think he'll keep his ERA around 4 this year.

Marquis seems to have rediscovered his sinker. He's looking very good.

I'd caution against saying he has looked "very good". Maybe very good for Marquis but not in general.

I agree that the sinker appears to be working, but he just gave up 6 hits to a spring line-up about half filled with minor leaguers. Now the type of pitcher he is, he's going to give up hits. Hitters are going to make contact off of him, but Marquis can influence what type of contact that will be. He's been effective. He's getting the job done. The defense is going to have to be on their toes when he is pitching because balls will be hit.

The hits don't bother me because his game is pitching to contact. As you said, if he is right, he will depend heavily on the INF defense. The ground balls will be the key to his success.

He gave up 4 in 4 but you're not the first to say that about Daisuke.

I just finished watching his last innings. He was flying open on the HR to Knott. On the 3 runs in the 4th, two very good pitches to Tejada and Hernandez, one was jam shot for a hit against Miggy and Hernandez hit a comebacker that Matsuzaka threw into CF that would usually be a DP. His FB looked flat at the end as well as his breaking ball and changeup (it's not a gyroball) were up.

He has to close up his delivery more to get some more life on his FB, once he does that, he'll be fine. He'll be inconsistent at times as well as dominant.

So....he's Beckett with a changeup?

I didn't see the same velo and life as Beckett has on his FB. Beckett also has a 90 MPH change.

Daisuke also a flashed a slider later on as well as 1 or 2 splitters. He threw more sliders later on, including a 86 mph slider to Dubois.

I've made my way to watching Carpenter now.

Carpenter looked very good today. He locates as well as any pitcher in the game with both his FB and curve, never hung a curve today. Also, showed the makings of a good change-up a couple of times. He threw one good slider as well.

I thought Colvin bulked up? He's still as skinny as a rail.
