He's 10 for 21 with 1 HR, 2 2B and a 3B. He's walked four times to just three strikeouts. I havent followed the Reds enough to know who he is facing, but it is an interesting spring storyline nonetheless.

It would be better if he was doing that for the cubs...

Did we take him in the major league or minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft? If we took him in the minor league phase where we could place him in the minors I guess it'd be nice to have him. But he's still about the turn 26, has never played above the AA level. Right now the backup OF is kinda filled with Floyd, Pagan, and Ward. It's a nice story, but I just don't see any room for him.

I believe the cubs got him in the rule 5 draft, but only took them because they had a prior arrangement with Cincinnati to ship him there for cash

That's exactly what it was. The Reds were afraid somebody else might take him before their turn, so they worked out the arrangement with the Cubs. The Cubs had no interest in him in the first place.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say Hamilton either sticks with the team all year or Cincinnati works out a trade to keep him.

I see his success and I immediately wish we didn't trade him, just like I immediately wished we didn't trade him when we got him.

Oh well. Good for him.

The only reason the Cubs drafted him in the first place was to trade him. If they didn't have that agreement with the Reds they just would have passed. He wouldn't have been a Cub. If the Cubs drafted him, then LATER decided to trade him, it would be different.

I agree. 50 grand for a high reward type player is a pretty small price to pay, especially with Griffey getting old.

And injury prone. Hamilton can play all fields. And who would Hamilton be blocking?

I too think a trade would be more likely than returning him. The last thing Tampa Bay needs is another outfielder. A few years ago the Cubs drafted Scott Chiasson from the A's, then when he didn't make the team they traded Eric Hinske to the A's for the rights to keep Chiasson (and got Miguel Cairo back from the A's as well). Something similar will likely be worked out between the Reds and D-Rays.

I don't there is any room to critcize the Cubs here. Hamilton has played something like 14 games, all at the A-ball, in the last 3 years.

I know he's talented, but something tells me he's not THAT talented. Talented enough to make abig league team and be productive after practically not playing for 3 years.

He was never really a Cub anyway, as someone mentioned before.

Exactly. Even if the Cubs drafted him, there was no way Piniella and Hendry could envision a guy with such limited pro experience taking up a roster spot all year. McDonough planted the seed that this organization plans on going to the World Series this year. A team that makes that kind of commitment isn't really doing themselves much of a favor by trying to hide a guy on their 25 man roster all year.

Plus Lou has had some experience with him in Tampa, maybe he felt it wasn't worth it too. I sure hope he makes it.

And yet we're seriously considering hiding Angel Pagan on the roster for the full year.

I'd rather have Josh and his upside.

Did Hamilton ever actually play for Lou? That might've had something to do with them not being interested in him for our purposes.

Yeah that and we could probably trade a bag of balls for him if we had to send him back down.

The Cubs had no idea whom they were drafting until the Reds handed them a slip of paper just seconds before the Cubs "took" Hamilton.
Interesting; I hadn't realized that. I assumed the Cubs knew who they were drafting for the Reds.

It makes sense - what if the Cubs hadn't thought of Hamilton and then decided they wanted him once the Reds mentioned him? (Yeah, I know, Hendry is a good guy.)
