Would you do a one year deal with him? The BB:K ratio doesn't show the fall that Randy Johnson had, but he is at that age point to where you expect it to happen at any year.

Being the baseball historian he seems to be, if the Cubs don't win the WS this year I could see him being very intriqued about a 1 year deal with the Cubs just for a chance to break the curse. After all he could be the man who won it for Boston and Chicago.

All indications point to Boston resigning him if he's good this year.

Maybe. I think if the other pitchers show they can pitch effectively I think they let him and his drama go.

Being that it is probably his last contract I won't be suprised to see him at least explore FA.

Possibly, but it sounds like Schilling wants to leave-I think Boston would have to knock his socks off with an offer after the season in order to stay:

I don't see the Cubs being in a position to knock Schilling's socks off. Boston is pretty famous for knocking people's socks off.

Assuming Zambrano gets his long term deal, that pretty much puts Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Prior in the rotation with guys like Guzman, Gallagher, Veal, Samardzija, Pawelek, Marshall and few choice others vying for the last spot. The Cubs will already be very close to 100m in committed dollars to only about 12 roster spots (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Zambrano, Lilly, DeRosa, Marquis, Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Jones and Blanco).

That still leaves Wood, Prior, Barrett and Izturis as players that will expect raises from their 2007 salary if they are kept around.

Oh, let me claify-I'm not saying that the Cubs will go after Schilling or should, I'm just saying that I think it's less than 50/50 that he stays with Boston at this point.

I say if he's any good in 2007, it's far greater than 50/50 he stays in Boston. I don't see any hard feelings coming out of this. Schilling will probably take the highest paycheck, and Boston probably has the ability to beat most others (unless the Mets want to get more old guys).

But I don't see any reason to even think about this until he shows what he can do in 2007. He hasn't been impressive since the bloody sock.

I think that's why he's talking now to get the Sox to make a move early before he shows his age this season.

Yeah, that's what he was trying to do, but Boston said they weren't going to budge. I bet they are more than comfortable to risk having the price go up with a great 2007.

That's what I would do if I were them. I'd also go to arb with him and get the picks if he flys the coup.

Is Clement under Boston's control in 2008? They sort of have an in house replacement if by chance Schilling goes elsewhere. This is assuming Schilling never gets back to being the ace he once was, of course.

You're also assuming Clement is worth a crap by then, which is doubtful.

His contract is done after 2007 though.

Well, he's supposed to be ready to start throwing sometime around midseason this year. And yeah, I was making that assumption as well.

But, Boston should have first dibs on bringing him back on a fairly reduced contract, if they want him.

i don't think the cubs are going to have an opening in the rotation.

z

prior

lilly

marquis

hill

guzman

marshall

etc

barring a trade, all those guys will be around next year.

I thought they said Marshall was hurting?

That doesn't mean he won't be around next year barring a trade.

Whoops. I forgot to list Hill in my list. I'd add Gallagher and Veal to that list. By 2008, both should be close enough to consider a look.

You're right, I was thinking now in ought 7. Z still not in with the 08 guys quite yet though.

But what if his socks are stuck to his ankle?

No Rich Hill in your rotation? Good thing RichHillisabeast hasn't been to this thread yet.
