Baseball is not a sport where "hustle" and "intangibles" make very much difference at all. At most, a guy that runs out every single grounder might get a few more hits over the year, but then if the guy is slow, as Ramirez is, it probably makes no difference at all. I suppose if the SS airmails the base entirely, it might prevent a guy from getting 2nd, but how many times does this happen.

Has anyone ever accused Ramirez of trotting from 2b to home plate while trying to score, or not charging a bunt up the 3b line? When Ramirez is accused of not hustling in some way that actually can make a difference in a baseball game, I'll care.

I hope Ramirez reads this thread so he can see not all the fans are on his case.

Again, I'm not on his case very much, but Ramirez did multiple times stand at the plate watching a hard hit ball thinking it was a home run and have it hit off the wall and cost him bases. There have been some hustle mistakes that have cost the Cubs at times, but the issue for Ramirez himself is way overblown.

I blame the manager for that. Dusty rewarded plays like that with continued playing time.

Moises Alou was too lazy to reach down and pick up a baseball, instead electing to kick it into the ivy to give the appearance it was hidden and a ground rule double, which turned into an inside the park home run. Alou was rewarded by staying in the game and playing the next game as well.

Dusty seemed to embrace that kind of sloppy play. Unless a rookie did it.

Well, I would agree that it is both of their faults-Ramirez for doing it, and Dusty for allowing it to continue-it's a small issue right now, but I bet in short order it won't be a issue anymore with Lou at the helm.

yeah, i dont think admiring home runs was done to prevent hammy problems. i'm ok not seeing that anymore. routine grounders are a different matter altogether.

I agree. You don't have to get in their face and embarrass them but make sure they know what you expect and I think Lou will do that. God Baker bugged me.

if "standing at the plate and admiring a long fly ball" equals not hustling, then the list of MLB'ers who don't hustle would include (but is not limited to) Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Bret Boone, Ken Griffey Jr.....

The problem is that Ramirez doesn't know when his home runs are going to go out or not-I have no problem if somebody stands there for an obvious home run, but if it's questionable, the player has to run in order to avoid what happened to Ramirez multiple times last year. Again though, if Ramirez is the worst hustler on the team, then the Cubs have a good hustling team, because his possible hustle issues are much smaller than several around the league.

Please, "multiple times"? You think Aramis has the speed to turn an obvious double into a triple?

Please, let us find some other nits to pick.

Aramis is fine.

Agreed. Admire a 475 foot blast for as long as you like, because it's leaving the field of play no matter where you are playing. If you just hit a David Eckstein fly ball, you need to get your butt in gear, because it may not be clearing the fence.

And because even David Eckstein can hit a home run, what have you really accomplished when you hit a ball 350 feet. It's certainly not awe inspiring where one should stand there and admire their fine work.

I'd be fine if he made it to 2b, which he didn't at least once last year.

I don't recall him not reaching second, but I've tried to block out memories of Cubs baseball from October 2003 to the present.

It happened. But, then again, I fault Dusty for that. After the first one, I'd tell him exactly what I said. If you have no doubt it's leaving the park, pull up a lounge chair and and an icy cold one, but if it has a chance to stay in the park, you had better be at 2b unless we're playing in Boston.

SAMMY SOSA. I remember a few times where sammy hopped and trotted and the ball didn't make it over the wall.

At least ARam didn't blow off ST for appearing at Car Shows in Atlantic City

Just Manny being Manny :-#

Last year he reported late and laced a double in his first ST AB.

The most interesting piece in that article was about Manny being 50 miles south of Chicago picking out his custom car.

The thing is, Sammy did that all the time and no one said anything about it. Every power hitter misjudges fly balls. It's not really fair to single out Ramirez on this point.
