Dr Z's Bear hate continues..and gives the Bears draft a "D"

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/dr_z/04/29/draft.report.card/4.html

Nevermind we scored the highest ranked TE in round 1 and the 3rd ranked guard in round 4.

What a pathetic, sad, little old man.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of the Bears draft, but D is pretty ridiculous.

The national media generally hated the Jones trade and are holding the Briggs situation, as well as the Lovie and Rivera situations against the Bears. I'm not getting the same "terrible offseason" vibe that these guys have.

Another national trend that came up during the draft is the completely contradictory stance by so many that teams don't stand a chance in today's NFL without a good to great franchise QB, and that Rex Grossman isn't even close to being a good QB. I don't know for sure, but I have to believe that winning the NFC championship counts as the Bears having a chance last year. And they are currently the favorite, or among the favorites to make the super bowl again this year, meaning people think they have a chance. Yet according to these people, the Bears shouldn't have a chance since Rex can't be a franchise QB.

He have the Dolphins a "B" as well...classic. I wish I could get paid to write such garbage.

Strange the different impressions people have of the draft.

I don't recall the Bears ranking much higher than C in the past few years, but alas, in the final analysis, the Bears have wound up having some of the best drafts of any team out there.

The Lions and Cardinals almost always rate high, then all those great players they draft fail and it turns out they 'drafted' poorly. I think alot of this is what happens from here on out: good teams turn their players into productive components. Bad teams like the Cardinals could turn a crop of all-pros into a cavalcade of bums.

I think that's part of what it is. There are 2 other big factors that come into play as well:

1) The good teams often have scouting departments that look a little deeper than the "big name" guys. They often take people that seem like reaches or that people don't really know much about because they realize that this person is great for their particular system. Teams like the Lions and Cardinals draft high talent players, but often they don't fit well into the system that they employ.

2) Good teams draft not only for present needs, but for future needs. Draft grades that go into the draft don't reflect that-often you'll hear a comment puzzled on why this team drafted a person where they are already strong. However, a good team has the replacements for possible FA losses already on the roster before that person leaves, and that comes through in previous drafts-unfortunately draft graders don't think that far ahead, so it always lowers their grade.

I agree, plus I think it's important to step back and realize the draft isn't the only place a team's needs can be fulfilled. It's the biggest, but there are other ways.

I hear GM's say all the time that they don't draft only for need, and that it isn't even the best way to approach the draft. Yet the analysis of team's drafts almost always focuses on whether they filled their needs. So it sounds like there's a bit of a disconnect there.

He gave the Cowboys a C, but his review makes no sense. He gave us a partial grade for our audacity to trade with Philly to grab a pass-rusher that might abuse McNabb, and then he says 2nd rounder Jame Marten (who wasn't a 2nd rounder, but a 3rd rounder) "rounds it off". What the heck is that supposed to mean?

You guys ripped off the Browns for the 22nd pick, and I wouldn't be worried about the rest.

Dr Z is a complete moron who has never said anything good about the Bears. He was the same guy that thought we would be last in our division last year, as well as other far out predictions that never came to fruition.

He's admitted to a personal grudge against Angelo, and he's had problems with Bears people in the past.

Something I thought was really funny a couple years ago, he went an entire season without picking a Bears game in the 8-10 picks he makes every week. Not that he never picked the Bears, but he never picked a game they played in. And there's no rhyme or reason to what he picks, he'll focus on headline games, but he picks stinkers as well. I think he just ignores them.

Are he & Wojechowski the same cat? (not sure of the spelling, and frankly I don't care).

Seems that way. They're both Bear-hater supremes.

I was pretty happy with our draft actually, the Browns' trade just made it that much better. Ware and Spencer coming off the edge in a Wade Phillips defense is going to be nasty, Marten and Free give us good OL depth, Stanback as a WR is going to be pretty good, Anderson will most likely be our starting FB, and the rest is depth. And we'll be getting McFadden with the #1 pick next year ;)

No, Gene Wojciechowski is strictly an ESPN writer from what I've seen. Dr. Z's real name is Paul Zimmerman.

LOL. Personally, I think Angelo comes off as a little cocky. I swear sometimes he makes a pick just to piss off the Bear fan base.

The Lions are the worst run team in PROFESSIONAL sports. And it isn't even close.

Before the discrace that is Matt Millen they once drafted a tight end in the second or third round when they ran a run and shoot offense. A team with Billy Simms and Barry Sanders running the ball for all those years should have at least challenged for the conference title, at least once.

Well, I guess he must see something others don't in Payne then. He's done it before. Payne doesn't seem real highly regarded from what I've read.

I think it's safe to say Angelo knows a tad more than I do 8-)

Payne and Chris Harris are from the same college and good friends, yet I'd say if Payne makes the squad it will be at the expense of Harris probbaly. That should be interesting.

Jerry was just on the Score. He loves Payne.

that's the only pick i don't like, but i've learned to trust jerry.

But do you know anything about him? Pretty hard to be critical of these small school guys. I've never seen him play.

Edit: Jerry said that Payne has "John Lynch" type skills.

I'm definitely going down there for training camp again this year. I want to see for myself if Olsen is really shy to make contact, among other things of course.

If you think Benson had it rough in camp, that's nothing compared to what will happen to Olsen if Urlacher & co. think he's afraid to take a hit.

Angelo was on NBC 5 for a draft special last night, and he said that they were looking at Olsen going into the draft and they really liked him. He said at the time of the pick they had offers to trade out of 31 and 37, but he said it made the most sense to take Olsen. He obviously isn't going to say much different now.

Just from scouting reports I've read...has good hands, quick, good against the run, but needs to work on fundamentals, not a very good tackler, plays slow, isn't very instinctive, struggles in coverage...

I think there were more athletic, more "football-smart" players available at that pick, but I'll hold judgment for now.

He does sound like Chris Harris.
