That's weird, because I just heard someone on ESPN radio say he would be "shocked" if we make it to training camp without a new Lovie contract.

Maybe I'm being optimistic but it seems a little ridiculous to claim that there is no chance of an extension this early. Why break off negotiations at this stage in the game?

Anyway, I hope they pay him because based on the players comments, they won't be too happy if he comes into camp without a new contract.

I'm just going to assume this is alot of posturing and BS, and that the Bears will indeed have a contract for Lovie before TC.

......because obviously it would be a poor show on a lot of levels if they don't. This is Angelo's hand-picked coach; I don't believe he's going to do such a thing (even though I know it's Phillips' job.....Phillips doesn't seem unreasonable to me).

This is pretty blatant "negotiating in the media" by Lovie's agent. And Mortenson is a pretty blatant sucker for these stories.

I'm not too concerned.

Me either until i hear numbers. FWIW Brian Billick just signed a 4 year extension, prior to that on Jan. 17 he signded a one year contract at $5.4M. Lovie should be in his neighborhood.

Guys.... you should be worried.... the bears arent even near offerring 5 million which is exactly where the market dictates his pay range. This is a cheap org. regardless of the massive amount of profit that this team enjoys.

Yeah, I've heard that same nonsense for years, even after the Bears went year after year handing out huge signing bonuses to free agents. This isn't 1993.

apparently Briggs is pissed off that the Bears applied the franchise tag to him. Have we already discussed this? I don't want to be a johnny come lately; haven't been reading this thread.

It's been mentioned, and it happens every time. There's not much to discuss. They already used it. So they will either sign him for 2007, sign him longterm, or get a nice return via trade.

Well, I mention it because Saints fans are going through the same thing with Charles Grant. We franchised him and now he's going on every radio station he can find and bitching about it, saying stuff like he feels that the organization "spat in his face"

Hell, I'd love to get spat in the face to the tune of 8.8 million a year.

I've heard about it, Lance will get over it.

Where have you actually heard how much the Bears have offered?

Or the 4th option that happens to many franchised players-a long and drawn out holdout. I think Briggs will be more reasonable than that, but sometimes you never know.

Most players who are tagged are like that. It completely limits their options in the offseason and they aren't pleased about it.

I don't believe Briggs has said much of anything. There's just been some "reports out of Briggs' camp are that he's not happy."

I wouldn't really call that a 4th option. It's something that might happen before one of those three things occurs, but it's not an outcome.

Well, sometimes that either leads to trading him for much lesser value, or Briggs not showing up until week 10.

What's the history of guys not showing up until week 10? Does it really happen?

I could see him missing all of training camp, but don't really care about that. He's an experienced pro, and not a QB, so it really doesn't matter.

Who was the last player to hold out utnil week 10 after being franchised? I honestly, don't know.

If Briggs did something like that, he'd probably cost himself around 25 million dollars.

In 97, Sean Gilbert held out the entire season.

In 98, Dan Williams held out the season after being franchised

Joey Galloway held out with Seattle till about week 10 (I can't remember the exact week he came back)

Keenan Mcardall held out half the season in 04 till TB caved and traded him to SD

Deion Branch last year would have held out and said that he wouldn't report till week 10 before the Patriots caved and traded him after week 1

I think only half of those involved the franchise tag, but those were just the ones I could come up with immediately, and I'm sure there have been others. There have been several cases though of people holding out much longer than training camp though, and it usually turns ugly for the club when that happens. I hope Briggs is not that ridiculous.

Well, if anything like that happens, we won't know for a long time, so there's not much to talk about with Briggs now. I think the Bears end up signing him to a big deal. But you never know, especially with Drew Rosenhaus involved.
