Hendry's said repeatedly that he's not looking at bringing in any OFs on multi-year deals, because he doesn't want to block Pie.

We've also heard a lot from Lou about wanting to have a real flexible roster with lots of bench depth so that the starters can be given more days off.

Given that, I think we can take at face value the notion that Floyd represents a 4th OF / bench depth / insurance, with the incentives becoming an issue only in a worst-case scenario with lots of injuries.

If I was all powerful and cared about my creation so much that I became a man and died for them....yes, I think I would care.

But what if you dont believe that this happened, much less is possible? It always bothers me when people say something like this.

I'm not a believer, per se, but there's probably more evidence of that than the Cubs winning the World Series. The Cubs will have six months to prove me wrong. I assume God will have much longer.

I'll be surprised if Jacque Jones is in the Wrigley home dugout in April. That said, Murton/Floyd off the bench is much better than Mabry/Pagan/Bynum/Neifi.

I'm usually one to look for the positive side of things, but I can't help but notice this... the vesting option is based on the number of plate appearances. With that in mind, it's hard to think why a player would agree to a contract like that if he wasn't promised that he'd have the opportunity to get that many plate appearances.

I like Floyd off the bench. I don't like him as an everyday player though. I wonder what Hendry and Piniella really have planned for him.

He'd sign it if it was the only chance he had of getting a bigger contract. Baseball players also tend to have sizable egos when it comes to their talent, there's a decent chance he thinks he'll prove his worth and get those PAs.

And with the context in which the "jesus" was originally used, it was an invocation of protection, much different from using it as a curse.

I suspect most people don't consider begging god for help to count as taking the lord's name in vain, although situations like this tend to trivialize the use

Are you kidding me? I answered that in the part of my post that you didnt quote. I said, "I'm not saying you have to believe that, but that is what a good amount of people believe." It doesnt matter if you dont believe it, it offends the people that do believe it, which there are 2 billion of.

Btw, I feel bad for rocket sauce, he's apologized like 5 times and even changed his post but still ended up kind of looking bad. I dont have any hard feeling towards anyone about this, I just wanted to put my opinions out there. Using the Lord's name in vain is like saying, "I just flushed a steamy Muhammad"....I hope this Floyd deal turns out well. GO CUBS!

Actually it does matter.

Oh, but it does. I'm going to guess that there are a lot of things you do on a day-to-day basis that would offend a follower of Islam, which has almost 2 billion members as well. Are you going to cut out all of that? Why not?

Excuse me for being late to the party, but would someone mind explaining to me what this has to do with the Floyd signing?

I think this is a very well balanced view of the Cubs plans on handling Floyd based upon several different articles and repeated statements from Hendry and Piniella and not just based on one article written by Dave van Dyck in which he makes some wild speculation based on absolutely nothing that has come out of the Cubs front office.

Man, I think everyone really needs baseball to start soon. I can't wait to see what the tangential topics will in be two weeks.

I want to see Floyd playing against any Lefty with reverse splits (sit Jones, Murton can handle a few games in RF) and any Righty he is likely to handle better than someone else in the OF. I want Murton given every chance to play more than Floyd. It isn't insurance if you overuse it.
